Buffalo's AirStation AC1300/N450 4-Port Gigabit Dual Band Wireless Ethernet Bridge WLI-H4-D1300 ($180, list) is currently the only device that can take advantage of the higher speeds of 802.11ac. Of course, 802.11ac has yet to be ratified so the device is still in draft 802.11ac, which the device's packaging acknowledges. A media bridge makes devices that are wired to it accessible wirelessly; typically you'd use it for hardware such as NAS devices, gaming consoles, and set-top boxes. While you can't wire your iPad or notebook to the media bridge and expect 1300 Mbps wireless performance if you also deploy Buffalo's 11ac router, the media bridge does offer a performance boost when used in conjunction with the D1800H. Performance gains are more noticeable when doing throughput-demanding tasks such as streaming high-definition video or copying large files across the network.

Although the biggest advantages of the device come when pairing it with the D1800H router, you can use it to connect to any AOSS or WPS enabled router. It's a well-made device for expanding wireless connectivity to wired devices, and if you are looking to leverage the performance boosts of Buffalo's 11ac router to the max right now, than the media bridge is a needed addition since there are no 11ac adapters currently available.

Specs and Setup
The D1300 is dual-band, supporting up to 1300 Mbps on the 5-GHz band and 450 Mbps on 2.4-GHz. The device is identical in design to the D1800H except the front panel has less LEDs. On the front is an AOSS button (AOSS is Buffalo's proprietary WPS "Wireless Protected Setup). When pushed, the media bridge syncs up with the D1800H and joins the wireless network.

The rear panel features four Gigabit Ethernet ports, a button to enable or disable 5-GHz, and a power on/off button.

The media bridge offers absolutely simple setup. There's no software or drivers to install. With the D1800H powered up and configured, I plugged in the media bridge and powered it on. To pair the router and bridge together is only a matter of pressing the AOSS button on the bridge and then the AOSS button on the D1800H. Pairing is complete when the wireless LED on both devices stop blinking. It's a solid setup process.

Performance
The media bridge does exactly what it's supposed to do; it allows wired devices to be accessed from a wireless network. I did want to see if I got any performance boost connecting a NAS to the bridge and wirelessly uploading a large file. I did. I connected Synology's DS712+ router to one of the LAN ports on the bridge and upload a 1.5GB file wirelessly. Connected to the bridge, my upload was about two minutes faster than with the NAS only connected to a router.

That may not sound like a lot, but the performance gain could make for better video streaming and gaming.

There's a management interface you can access via a browser on the device. It provides some network setting control, but there isn't a heck of a lot to manage with a bridge and most users will never have to access the interface.

A Bridge to 802.11ac
At the moment, the D1300 is the only way to take advantage of 802.11ac and that only in unison with Buffalo's D1800H 11ac router. On its own, it's an excellent media bridge and can work with non-Buffalo WPS?supported devices. With setup only requiring a push of a button, it's a four star earner for networking hardware. My single criticism is that unless you purchase the D1800H and want to get the gains of 11ac, the D1300 is pricey for a dual-band media bridge, when perfectly good non 802.11ac media bridges are available for $120 or less.?

Romney ready to claim GOP nomination after Texas

CRAIG, Colo. (AP) ? Mitt Romney is poised to clinch the Republican presidential nomination after Tuesday's Texas GOP primary, a largely uncontested election that will formalize the former Massachusetts governor's status as President Barack Obama's general election challenger.

While Romney's nomination has been virtually assured for a month, the day marks the culmination of several years of work, dating back to his unsuccessful 2008 effort, and perhaps far earlier.

"It'll be a big day tomorrow," Romney told reporters aboard his campaign plane Monday evening. "I'm looking forward to the good news."

But Romney's focus Tuesday will be hundreds of miles north of Texas, where he's scheduled to court voters and donors in Colorado and Nevada during a two-state swing punctuated by a Las Vegas fundraiser with conservative businessman Donald Trump.

The evening event, set for the Trump International Hotel, comes amidst fresh criticism from Republicans and Democrats over Trump's continued questioning of Obama's citizenship. Romney hasn't condemned Trump's false claims, offering a fresh example of the presidential contender's reluctance to confront his party's more extreme elements. There have been other examples in recent weeks that underscore Romney's delicate push to win over skeptical conservatives while appealing to moderates and independents who generally deliver general election victories.

Asked Monday to weigh in on Trump's support for the so-called birther movement, Romney declined to condemn Trump's latest suggestion that Obama was born in Kenya.

"I don't agree with all the people who support me. And my guess is they don't all agree with everything I believe in," Romney told reporters before flying from California to Colorado Monday evening. "But I need to get 50.1 percent or more. And I'm appreciative to have the help of a lot of good people."

Polling suggests that the election between Romney and Obama will be very close, ultimately decided by several swing states, Colorado and Nevada among them. Romney will begin campaigning Tuesday in the northern Colorado town of Craig before flying to Las Vegas for an afternoon rally before the Trump fundraiser.

The Texas primary offers 152 delegates; Romney is just 58 delegates shy of the 1,144 needed to become the nominee. His Republican rivals Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich already have endorsed Romney, while Texas Rep. Ron Paul has stopped actively campaigning. Gingrich is expected to attend the Trump fundraiser.

Under similar circumstances last week, Romney swept all the delegates in GOP primaries in Kentucky and Arkansas and picked up more endorsements from party leaders.

But Romney's meeting with Trump may generate as much interest, or more, than his tightened grasp on the Republican nomination.

"I do not understand the cost benefit here," conservative commentator George Will said over the weekend. "The cost of appearing with this bloviating ignoramus is obvious, it seems to me."

"Donald Trump is redundant evidence that if your net worth is high enough, your IQ can be very low and you can still intrude into American politics," Will continued. "Again, I don't understand the benefit. What is Romney seeking?"

Trump revived the false claims about Obama's birthplace late last week, citing a discredited story about a literary agency that mistakenly listed that Obama was born in Kenya.

While Romney briefly addressed the issue Monday, his senior aide Eric Fehrnstrom also declined to condemn Trump's remarks in a recent interview.

"I can't speak for Donald Trump ... but I can tell you that Mitt Romney accepts that President Obama was born in the United States," Fehrnstrom said. "He doesn't view the place of his birth as an issue in this campaign."

Romney has been criticized on several occasions for failing to speak out against extreme rhetoric from his party. The reluctance stands in contrast to the 2008 GOP presidential nominee and current Romney supporter, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who once corrected a supporter who called Obama a Muslim.

And on Tuesday, Obama's re-election campaign surfaced a new television commercial directly accusing Romney of failing to stand up to "the voices of extremism" in his party.

The ad takes the former Massachusetts governor to task for failing to speak out against real estate mogul Donald Trump, a supporter who has consistently charged that Obama is not a U.S. citizen. It opens by showing 2008 nominee John McCain brushing aside a woman who raised the citizenship issue at a town hall-style meeting, and the commercial asks the viewer, "Why won't Mitt Romney do the same?"

Campaigning in Cleveland earlier in the month, Romney did not initially respond to a supporter who suggested that Obama should be tried for treason. He said after the rally that he didn't agree.

He was also slow to condemn conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, who said a college student defending Obama's contraception policy was "a slut." At the time, Romney initially declined to weigh in on the issue before saying "it's not the language" he would have used.

And he was initially silent on violent rhetoric from classic rocker Ted Nugent before a spokeswoman said Romney "believes everyone needs to be civil."

McGill University student plan provides healthcare to rural areas with Windows Phone and Win 8

Those of us living in metropolitan areas don't think twice about our ease of access to medical care, but those in rural areas don't enjoy such easy access to a doctor. Abhijeed Kalyan and Shravan Narayan from McGill University in Canada are aware of this problem, and came up with a way for doctors to diagnose and treat patients from afar. Called Project Neem, it's got a hub and spoke organizational structure that puts a healthcare worker in every village and leverages the power of Windows Phone to connect them with medical staff in distant cities.

Participating healthcare workers are given basic medical training and a handheld loaded up with a custom app that identifies patients by scanning their national ID card and stores their pertinent medical info -- from temperature and blood pressure readings to a variety of symptoms. The app has a virtual human body on board that lets users tap parts of the anatomy to bring up a series of symptoms that can be selected to provide treating physicians with the info they need. That information is stored in the cloud and accessed by doctors through a Windows 8 app, who then can relay appropriate treatments to the local healthcare worker. Now all we need is someone to make a real-world tricorder, and we'll truly be able to bring medical care to the masses, wherever they may be.

Cardinal among plotters in Vatican scandal?

VATICAN CITY --?The worst crisis in Pope Benedict's pontificate deepened on Monday when Italian media said at least one cardinal was among those suspected of leaking sensitive documents as part of a power struggle at the top of the Catholic Church.?The pope's butler, who has been arrested, has pledged to cooperate in the probe.?

Leading Italian newspapers Corriere della Sera and Il Messaggero reported Monday that the pope's butler ? arrested three days ago for allegedly feeding documents to Italian journalists ? clearly did not act alone, and that an unidentified cardinal is suspected of playing a major role.?

The scandal exploded last week when within a few days the pope's butler was arrested, the head of the Vatican's own bank was abruptly dismissed and a book was published alleging conspiracies among the cardinals or "princes of the Church."

However, the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, denied the reports that a cardinal might be the next target of the "Vatileaks" probe. He said many Vatican officials were being questioned but insisted: "There is no cardinal under suspicion."?

Meanwhile, the lawyer for the pope's butler says his client has pledged "full cooperation" in the investigation and wants the truth to come out.?

On his final day in Cuba, Pope Benedict noted that the Cuban government has taken steps to allow greater freedom of religion, but still has room for improvement. Vatican analyst George Weigel talks about the Pope's message and his meeting with Fidel Castro.

The commitment by butler Paolo Gabriele to cooperate raises the specter that higher-ranking prelates may soon be named in the scandal. Leaks of confidential Vatican correspondence have shed light on power struggles and intrigue inside the highest levels of the Catholic Church.?

Gabriele, the pope's personal butler since 2006, was arrested Wednesday evening after documents he had no business having were found inside his Vatican City apartment. He remains in detention in a Vatican detention facility, accused of theft, and has met with his wife and lawyers.?

The 46-year-old father of three was always considered extremely loyal to Benedict and his predecessor, John Paul II, for whom he briefly served. Vatican insiders said they were baffled by his alleged involvement. Gabriele's lawyer, Carlo Fusco, reported Monday that Gabriele was "very serene and calm."?

So far,?Gabriele?has been the only?one arrested, but Lombardi stressed that the investigation was continuing.?

The probe is working on two separate tracks. Vatican magistrates are pursuing the criminal investigation, and Gabriele was arrested as part of that. Separately, Pope Benedict appointed three cardinals to form an investigative commission to look beyond the narrow criminal scope of the leaks.?

Those cardinals have the authority to interview broadly across the Vatican bureaucracy, Lombardi said, and can both share information with Vatican prosecutors and receive information from them.?

The Catholic Church accused the nation's largest organization of American nuns of espousing "radical feminist" ideas. MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell discusses the charges with Sister Jeannine Gramick, who was once silenced by the Vatican, and Jeff Stone, communications director of Dignity USA.

Various theories have surrounded her disappearance, linking her kidnapping to an attempt to free the Turkish gunman who shot John Paul in 1981, or to alleged Vatican financial dealings with a Rome criminal gang.?

The march came a day after an Italian prosecutor told CNN that a priest who used to run a church in Rome is under investigation on suspicion of complicity in her?abduction.

Respect and Love Yourself

Another way to find happiness is to have respect and love for yourself as a person. In order to find any happiness in your life, you have to first love yourself for who you are and that you have a right to be here, just like anyone else on this planet.

Be Forgiving

It does not matter what people have done to you in the past, you need to find a way to forgive them. If you cannot forgive people, you are going to make yourself miserable. In most cases, they do not have any idea that they are destroying your life. If they do know that you are holding a grudge against them, it is most likely going to bring them happiness. The best revenge to get on someone is to be truly happy with yourself.

Be Helpful To Others

Helping others is another way to find happiness. It is a known fact that when you help another person who is in need, you not only help them, but you also help yourself. Giving help to another person makes you feel good about who you are and that often brings on happiness.

Appreciate what you have

Still another way to be happy is to appreciate what you have in your life-your physical, mental and spiritual being, being happy with where you are in life; even if you don?t have a million dollars or have a big home, being happy with your station in life and happy with the simple things in life like being able to see and hear what is around you, the joy of food, the joy and happiness of friends, the happiness that shows on other people?s faces when they see you walk into a room and the happiness of peace and quiet. But no matter how simple the things you see in life-be it a flower, tree, blue sky or happiness in being with someone you love, enjoy the moment and enjoy the happiness you feel.

Communicate and Interact With Company You Like

Do your best to surround yourself with positive people that you get along with. When you are around negative people, they are going to bring you down. Positive people will do their best to be a good friend and make you happy. It is well-known that happy people have lower blood pressure and better health. This is why you should do your best to be a happy person and do not let other people get to you. You are only torturing yourself when you listen to the harsh things that they are saying. Remember, kill them with kindness for the most happiness in life.

Apple Inc?s CEO Steve Jobs introduced ?iPad? to the world. 300,000 iPads were sold on the day of its launch. Even today, iPad is the most used and commercially successful computer tablet around the world.

History of iPad
Apple had launched a product named ?Newton message pad? in 1993. Newton was a personal digital assistance (PDA) device developed by Apple. It looked like iPhone, but it had limited features. It had a pen enabled interface. It was not a commercial success, but now people feel that it was Apple?s first step towards iPhone and iPad. Reports suggest that Apple was working on iPad since 2007, after the launch of their successful mobile phone known as ?iPhone?. iPad uses touch screen technology similar to that used in iPhone.

Apple launched iPad on January 27th 2010. iPad 2 was launched on March 2nd 2011 and sold 30 million units in 2011. iPad?s third generation device was launched on March 7th 2012. Apple sold 3 million iPads (third generation) after just 3 days of its launch. Apple?s iPad has generated thousands of jobs for apps makers around the globe. It is said that Google?s android market (now known as Google play) is actually inspired from Apple?s app store.

Steve Jobs was one of Apple?s founders; he was given all the credit for making apple successful in mobile phone and table computer market. It was Steve Job?s vision to develop a great tablet computing device. Steve passed away on October 5th 2011.

Features of iPad
Apple?s iPad offers exiting and impressive features, which no other tablet computer maker can offer. The latest version of Apple?s iPad (third generation) has a stunning retina display, quad-core graphics with A5X chip and a 5 megapixel camera which captures amazing photos and 1080p HD video. It works with 4G LTE networks. Some of iPad?s technical details were our even before its release. These details tempted Apple?s competitors to come up with their own tablet computers, and cause ?tablet riot?. Many companies made unsuccessful attempts to launch their own tablet computers to compete with Apple?s iPad. Companies like HP, Dell, Motorola, HTC, and Benq failed to impress people with their tablet computers. Some competitors ended up filing bankruptcy after spending millions on product development. Seattle Pacific's Brittany Aanstad wins NCAA javelin title

PUEBLO, Colo. ? When Brittany Aanstad's next-to-last javelin throw hit the ground, the Seattle Pacific senior's first thought was that she would at least get one more try to win the national title.

She got that last try ? but didn't actually need it.

Aanstad's fling of 168 feet, 1 inch on Saturday put her on top of the podium at the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships.

"I'm as excited as heck ? it was a long time coming," Aanstad said.

It was redemption and then some for the Falcons star, who entered last season's nationals as the top seed but finished second.

Aanstad's performance eclipsed the 25-year-old Seattle Pacific school record of 167-2, set by Anita Sartin in 1987. It beat the Great Northwest Athletic Conference mark of 163-6 set by Western Washington's Monika Grusezki at last year's NCAAs. It also bettered the 'B' standard for next month's U.S. Olympic trials.

The NCAA title was Seattle Pacific's first since Jessica Pixler won the third of her three 1,500-meter titles in 2010. The last javelin champion for the Falcons was Michelle DeVries in 1990.

Among other results, Western Washington freshman Katie Reichert earned All-America honors with a seventh-place finish in the women's javelin (season-best 152-5).

More Huskies headed to nationals

AUSTIN, Texas ? Washington padded its NCAA finals roster on the last day of NCAA West Prelims, with seven more Huskies making the cut.

Washington got outright victories from Megan Goethals (women's 5,000, 15 minutes, 46.82 seconds) and J.J. Juilfs (men's pole vault, 17-8 ?), while Katie Flood (women's 1,500, 4:17.05), A.J. Maricich (men's high jump, 7-2 ?), and the men's 4x100-meter relay (Sam Rucker, James Alaka, Maurice McNeal, Ryan Hamilton, 39.98) also marched on.

Brandon Kizer pitched eight innings, allowing five hits, one walk and one unearned run while striking out six as Seattle University (23-29) edged Portland, 2-1, at Bellevue College's Courter Field.

? Andy Hunter allowed one run on four hits in eight innings, and Gonzaga (34-22, 14-10 West Coast) scored 10 runs in the third inning of an eventual 17-1 victory over Brigham Young in Provo, Utah.

It may lack the poetry of ?the Eagle has landed,? but here?s major space news: the Dragon has docked.

The Dragon capsule, built by dot-com magnate Elon Musk?s company SpaceX, is the first commercial spacecraft to visit the International Space Station. It left Earth Tuesday. ?And launch of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, as NASA turns to the private sector to resupply the International Space Station."

All previous resupply flights have been operated by national space agencies such as NASA. The Dragon?s flight was meant to demonstrate the capsule?s capabilities, and the spacecraft had to pass a series of tests on the way to the station before NASA cleared it for approach.

On Friday, May 25th, astronauts aboard the ISS used a robotic arm to grab the free-floating Dragon capsule and hauled it in for docking. By 12:02pm, the spacecraft was firmly attached to the station.

Under a $1.6 billion contract with NASA, SpaceX plans to make 12 cargo runs to the station in the coming years. And someday the Dragon capsule could carry not just cargo but astronauts. Says Musk, ?It's the dawn of a new era of space exploration.?

Social media is a part of daily life for the vast majority of people and businesses. It?s the perfect platform for businesses to gain exposure to a large pool of potential customers, while being able to interact with their existing customers. One use of social media that companies are starting to adopt is social customer service.

Social customer service is a bit of an ambiguous term with no real established meaning. Before you pursue this strategy, you should be clear on exactly what it is and the benefits it can bring your company.

What exactly is social customer service? Think of the last time you had a problem with a program on your computer. Did you contact tech support? Or did you turn to your friends on social media? If you turned to social media, this is one of the main elements of social customer service.

Customers are starting to go to social media sites when they have questions, many times contacting the company directly. Having customer service elements on social media to answer these questions or field complaints is social customer service. A great example of this is OPEN Forum, run by AMEX. It allows customers to interact with one another, while giving the company a channel to feed technical help and information to them.

Benefits of social customer service There are four main benefits of leveraging social customer service in your business.

• Meeting consumer expectations. Let?s face it, the majority of your customers are using social media with many now expecting you to as well. If you meet their expectations, there?s a higher chance they?ll stay your customers.
• Increased loyalty. One of the main reasons companies should be on social media is that an effective campaign can help improve customer and brand loyalty. Social customer service is an extra service that can help further increase loyalty.
• Decreased customer service costs. If you offer customer service on social media, you could potentially decrease your total costs. The expenditure required to setup and maintain the online service is fractional compared to the physical operation.

While there are some distinct advantages to social customer service, it?s not a good idea to shift all of your customer support onto social platforms. Rather it should be viewed as a supplementary service, or another way for customers to get in contact with you. 38 Studios employees unpaid since May 1, health insurance ends on

38 Studios employees have not been paid since May 1 and their health care will end Thursday at midnight, a source with knowledge of the situation tells Joystiq. Employees are normally paid on the first and 15th of each month.

When asked if the studio would be shutting down this week, the source could only say, "Unknown at this time. Outlook is not good."

We're informed that 38 Studios' MMO, "Project Copernicus," announced by Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee as launching in June 2013, did have that date as its internal target. However, "Whether this is realistic or not is up for debate."

Gov. Chafee said in a press conference today that he would do what he could to prevent the studio from shutting down. Will the studio still exist within a month? "I have no idea," our source replied.

While lugging 40 new cabinets into their nearly built home Wednesday, the Kelly family will gleefully stack another layer of chaos onto the saw-and-sales frenzy buzzing through their suburban Charlotte subdivision.

?It is a crazy-bizarre scene," said Jacy Painter Kelly, who will move into her new, four-bedroom house in Baxter Village in August along with her two young kids and husband. "Sales are insane. And the Goodyear store across the street gets a lot of business from all the nails in (residents?) tires.??

The bustle at Baxter Village is part of a quickening home-construction pulse across the nation: New-home sales edged up 3.3 percent from March to April to a seasonally adjusted 343,000-unit annual pace after a 332,000-unit rate in March, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday.

That is a far cry from the 1.3 million sold at the height of the housing boom in 2005, but still represents the latest sign the battered housing market has regained a semblance of normality.

The median price of a new home sold hit $235,700 last month, up 4.9 percent from April 2011, according to Commerce statistics. A separate report Wednesday from the Federal Housing Finance Agency showed home prices also gained 1.8 percent in March after pushing 0.3 percent higher in February.

When blended with Tuesday?s report from the National Association of Realtors that existing-home sales touched a two-year high in April, analysts say evidence of a modest real estate revival seems to be mounting.?

?Things are looking good,? said Pat Newport, an economist with IHS Global Insight. ?These are still very low numbers by historical standards. But when combined with the NAR report, this tells us that something is going on. Prices are stabilizing after adjusting for inflation.

?It?s hard to get a good picture of the housing market early in the year because (warming) weather can distort the numbers. But I think the picture emerging is a good one. The housing market is getting better,? Newport added. ?We had a very good first quarter, and the numbers are telling us it was more than just good weather helping the market.?

Amid Wednesday?s fresh data dump, Newport called the FHFA release ?the really good news? because ?it showed prices are increasing pretty much across the board, in all nine census divisions.?

Newly built homes represent less than 20 percent of the U.S. housing market, but they place a far larger footprint on the overall economy. Each home built creates an average of three jobs per year and produces about $90,000 in tax revenue, according to the National Association of Home Builders.

The 3.3 percent rise in new home sales ?is line with our expectations for a continued, modest increase in home sales as buyers gain confidence in the economy and their jobs,? said David Crowe, chief economist with the NAHB.

?When you buy a previously owned house, you have to put a lot of cash down. You don?t have a lot left to make your home exactly what we needed. By building, you still have to put cash down but you can design just what you want it to be,? she added. ?I don?t want to be tucked away by myself and I don?t want to be working in the dining room.??

Powers, Iran discuss detail of possible nuclear deal

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - World powers and Iran held unusually detailed talks on Wednesday about how it could show its nuclear work is not a disguised quest for atom bombs, in a Baghdad meeting aimed at halting a slide toward a new Middle East war.

After a 15-month diplomatic freeze which saw tensions soar, and exploratory talks in Istanbul last month, the six powers were testing Iran's readiness to curb its disputed uranium enrichment program, under pressure of harsher sanctions.

The stakes could hardly be higher: global oil markets are jittery over sanctions imposed on Iran's vital crude exports and the possibility of Israeli strikes against its defiant arch-enemy, which has threatened reprisals if it comes under attack.

Iran warned again that it would not give in to pressure, but both sides were upbeat about the scope for an outline deal as the meeting between Iran and the United States, Russia, China, Germany, France and Britain began in the Iraqi capital.

"We had a detailed exchange this morning. (We) presented our package, the atmosphere was businesslike and meetings will continue this afternoon," a Western diplomat close to the negotiations told Reuters.

The powers' overall goal is an Iranian agreement to measures that would allay suspicions it is using its nuclear energy program as a cover for designing atomic bombs. Iran's priority will be to negotiate relief from sanctions damaging its economy.

The pivotal proposal by the six, led by European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, was for Iran to halt its enrichment of uranium to the higher fissile concentration of 20 percent, her spokesman Michael Mann said after talks began.

That is the Iranian nuclear advance most worrying to the West since it largely overcomes technical obstacles to reaching 90-percent, or bomb-grade, enrichment. Iran says it is enhancing the fissile purity of uranium only for medical research.

"We have a new offer on the table which addresses our main concerns about the Iranian nuclear program. The 20-percent enrichment question," Mann told reporters. "We hope the Iranians respond positively and we can make progress today."

In a separate interview with Iran's state-run English-language Press TV, Mann said no final deal was expected in Baghdad because progress was likely to be only gradual.

But he said toughened sanctions, especially an EU ban on Iranian oil exports due to take full effect on July 1, had helped to draw Iran finally into serious negotiations.

"We have put forward some things from our side to give back to the Iranians," Mann said, welcoming the approach of chief Iranian negotiator Saeed Jalili. "The mood music is certainly good between Jalili and Mrs Ashton and hopefully we can get a positive result."

Iran has hinted at flexibility on higher-grade enrichment although analysts caution that it would be unlikely to compromise much while sanctions remain in place.

In previous meetings the two sides could not even agree an agenda, with each largely repeating known positions and Tehran refusing any dialogue on changes to its nuclear path.

Ashton aides did not rule out talks extending into Thursday.

IRAN HOPES FOR "GOOD NEWS" SOON

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, speaking to reporters in Tehran, said: "The ideas fielded to us speak of the fact that the other side would like to make Baghdad a success. We hope that in a day or two we can bring good news."

Salehi also warned that Iran would not bow to pressure. "Their policies of pressure and intimidation are futile. They have to adopt policies to show goodwill to solve this issue."

Russia said the Islamic Republic appeared ready for serious discussion of substantive steps to resolve the impasse in return for the phased removal of sanctions.

Speaking of preparatory discussions before Baghdad, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in Moscow: "We got the clear impression ... that the Iranian side is ready to seek agreement on concrete actions." These would be taken step by step.

Another proposed step will be an updated version of an idea first floated in 2009 that envisaged Iran shipping out the bulk of its stockpile of low-grade uranium - which is potential nuclear weapons fuel - in return for higher-enriched fuel for the medical research reactor in Tehran, a diplomat said.

It was unclear whether that idea would gain traction after Iran's announcement on Tuesday that it had supplied its first batch of domestically made fuel to that reactor - a message likely meant to boost its leverage in negotiations.

The Islamic Republic launched higher-grade enrichment two years ago and has since transferred the operation to a bunkered, underground plant at Fordow that, to Israeli alarm, would be largely impervious to attack from the air.

"The key issue is the 20-percent enrichment potential. This has to be addressed in order to have a productive outcome," said one Western diplomat. "The marching orders for Baghdad are to have concrete ideas on the table, maybe not necessarily agree on all details of these ideas, but to have a clear commitment."

Iran, a major oil exporter, says it is enriching uranium for electricity. That requires fuel refined to 5 percent, although it will be many years before power stations are built. It also wants radioactive isotopes for cancer treatment.

Tehran has repeatedly ruled out suspending enrichment as called for by several U.N. Security Council resolutions.

DEAL ON EXPANDED U.N. INSPECTIONS "CLOSE"

In a possible sign of a new Iranian willingness to address concerns about its atomic ambitions, the U.N. nuclear supervisor said on Tuesday he expected to sign a deal soon to unblock an investigation into suspected work on atom bombs.

But Western officials note past failures to carry out deals on more intrusive inspections between the International Atomic Energy Agency and Iran, and their patience is running out.

Some Iranian officials kept up a hardline before the talks.

"The wall of distrust between Iran and the West is high and our public opinion has serious doubts about their compliance with their obligations. The negotiations ... are a good litmus test to prove the West's goodwill," Press TV quoted Kazem Jalili, spokesman for parliament's national security and foreign policy committee, as saying on Wednesday.

Iran suggested it would try to parlay its reported rapprochement with the IAEA into a deal in Baghdad to relax sanctions inflicting increasing damage on its economy, including a European Union oil embargo due to take effect in July.

But Western officials ruled out such a weighty concession so soon, even though their call for a "step-by-step" negotiating process is widely seen as a tacit admission that sanctions will have to be eased at some point.

"Sanctions are only going to be lifted if we have significant and genuine progress," one diplomat said.

Israel, widely assumed to have the Middle East's only atomic arsenal, has loudly expressed its skepticism about the chances for diplomacy to rein in its major adversary.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Israel was concerned that the world powers would not press hard enough to put a full stop its nuclear program and that Israel would keep all options open - an allusion to military action - to achieve that goal.
