Army Reviews Controversial Drug After Afghan Massacre

Caspian Sea oil and gas [wikipedia.org] unrecovered reserves are enormous, valued at over $10 trillion. Iran is currently a transit country for this, but the aim is to use Afghanistan instead. The Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline [wikipedia.org] is a big part of this. Plans for an Afghan pipeline have been in the making for a long time, U.S. Congress testimony in 1998: [house.gov]

Mr. MARESCA. It's not going to be built until there is a single Afghan Government. That's the simple answer. We would not want to be in the situation where we became the target of the other faction. In any case, because of the financing situation, credits are not going to be available until there is a recognized government of Afghanistan.
Mr. BEREUTER. So you are not making any suggestions about the prospects of that or timing of that. It's just you are not going to move or it's not going to be moved from another source until that happens. That would be your judgment?
Mr. MARESCA. That's my judgment. We do of course follow very closely the negotiations which have been going on. We are hopeful that they will lead somewhere. All wars end. I think that's a universal rule. So one of these days this war too will end. Then I believe the pipeline will be secure.

That war (officially) ended thanks to the U.S. military, Afghanistan was (officially) unified under the Karzai government, and in 2002 Karzai signed the TAPI pipeline deal. Very fast given the complexity of such a deal. The U.S. has invested $0.5 trillion in the Afghan War so far, that's quite a lot just to bring bin Laden to justice. That $0.5 trillion didn't magically disappear - it was given to corporations which have profited handsomely from this war. Some stand to profit even more in the future from the ability to export Caspian Sea oil and gas through Afghanistan. And it also isolates Iran further.

Is it all a coincidence? It does seem awfully convenient...

Green Initiatives For Home Improvement and Home Construction

With the rising call for eco-friendly initiatives, more and more homeowners today are getting conscious of the demands of their houses appliances, heating and cooling system, energy consumption, carbon footprint, etc. Thus, they search for more eco-friendly alternatives that can help for sustainable living. In this entry, we will look at some of the most popular green initiatives and home-efficiency tips that can suit to almost any budget, whether its for home construction plan or renovation plan.

1. Knowing the Energy Weak Points of Your Home

Whether you choose to hire a contractor or you do home renovations yourself, it is always good to start with an energy audit of your house. This can be done by thorough inspection where professionals checks for air leaks, combined energy consumption of your home appliances, electrical system, etc. Professionals can pinpoint energy weak points of your house and how much theyre costing you in your monthly bills, and of course, suggest for changes and improvements to address the problems.

2. Controlled Airflow

Outlines and tiny spaces around your doors and windows can cause tremendous waste of your energy consumption. United States Department of Energy estimated that, about 20% of your energy spent in heating or cooling goes to waste, as air literally creeps out through the doors and windows. This problem is quite common in old-houses because of ill-fitted and worn-out doors and windows that can easily warm or cool air to leak into or out of the house.

Your best bet is to repair these leaks with various home improvement tools and methods. Using something as simple as draft-catcher placed under the door can easily seal and control airflow. Addressing this problem is relatively easy, and there are tons of DIY stuff available in home improvement stores for this.

3. Insulation

Blown fill insulation, batting and rigid sheets can definitely provide significant benefits for energy-conscious homeowners, as these insulation materials can avert heat transfer from materials in your house, namely drywall, masonry and wood. You can easily find this stuff in your nearest home improvement DIY shops and install these padding to avoid inside the walls and other energy-consuming drafts and crawlspaces.

4. Develop a Low-impact Lawn

Consider every typical home yard equipment most home owners use; lawn mowers and string trimmers, all these things produce harmful emissions. Also, many fertilizers and pesticides use to grow bountiful gardens can leach into the groundwater, causing water pollution that can easily affect the quality of the water that pours out from your faucets. In addition, badly managed runoff water can easily fill your sewers.

Your best bet for a low-impact lawn is to grow native plants as ground cover, rather than baggy grass seeds. You can also change your landscape from and fit it to your lawn with layers of wild flowers rather than filling it up with rare ornamental plants. This will help you put your lawns water consumption and chemical fertilizers use in minimum. For maintaining your lawn, you can opt for manual lawnmower or electric lawnmower rather than gas-powered machines. You can also cool the temperature of your lawn and protect your house from the harsh solar heating in summer days by strategically placing shade trees.

Whether youre hiring a professional construction company for your home building or renovation needs, it is always better to tell them your eco-friendly needs right at the planning of the construction. This will help you protect your environment and save you from expensive monthly electricity and water bills.

Review: Wrath of the Titans | People's Critic: Film Reviews - seattlepi ...

Almost two years after the release of Clash of the Titans, Sam Worthington is back as Perseus, the son of Zeus who struggles with his Demigod destiny, in Wrath of the Titans. What better way to review this movie than to ask a few burning questions and get answers from the one person who will give me an honest answer ? ME!

What?s the plot?

The plot stays relatively simple. ?Perseus teams up with Andromeda (Rosamund Pike) and Agenor (Toby Kebbell) to rescue his father Zeus (Liam Neeson) from Hades (Ralph Finnes)and his evil half demigod brother Ares (Edgar Ramirez). They also must defeat the evil Titans who?ve escaped prison and plan to destroy the world. It sounds like a lot, but it?s nothing two Demigods and a human girl can?t handle.

How is it different from 2010?s Clash?

Well, there are more monsters and en evil half brother. At times, Wrath feels a lot like Clash, but it is indeed its own story. That?s either good or bad depending on how you feel about the franchise. ?Wrath also has more action, 50% less Pegasus, and 75% more Sam Worthington mullet.

What will audiences like?

They?ll enjoy some of the really cool state-of-the-art special effects. ?The evil Titans look pretty good on the big screen. Toby Kebbell is great comic relief as Agenor. He?s like the third wheel comedian in a 80?s buddy cop flick. He?s annoyingly funny, but the two buddies desperately need him for [fill in expertise or something he is singular knowledge of]. Agenor fills that role in and fills it well. He?s easily my favorite part of this film.

Should I see it in 3D?

Not necessary. If you do have money to blow and like wearing plastic glasses, help yourself.

What will make people want to walk out?

The dialogue is dry and boring for the entire film. There are way too many speeches about family, brotherhood, ?how they must come together as one, and blah blah blah blah. Waaaaaaay too much talking and not enough swords swinging.? The pre fight speeches were the first two times, but after the ninth time it?s pretty old. Sam Worthington is someone I want to like, but he performed like a mannequin in a tunic. ?The lifeless way he delivers his lines makes me cringe. Not to mention he spend the entire movie getting his butt kicked. I don?t need my hero to be a punching bag. I know Sam is happily cashing this checks, but this has to stop.

There?s also Perseus? son Helius. He spends the whole time looking like he?s about to cry or he?s constipated. I?m still not sure which one it was. I hated him almost as much as I hate Carl from The Walking Dead????almost. Carl still holds the number one spot.

Also, the movie is 90 minutes, but it paced poorly so it feels much longer. I?m taking to you Unnecessary Ten Minute Scene find a maze that wasn?t even hard to solve.

Will we get to see the big battle we missed in Clash?

Nope. I?m surprised people didn?t throw drinks at the screen. 100 minutes of build up to a 2 minute fight. Audiences will not be pleased.

Was it necessary to toss in a love story at the end?

I?m not sure why that happened. I?m still trying to wash the stink of that scene off me.

How do you really feel?

If you?re a fan of Clash, you may want to buy a ticket for Wrath. If you felt Clash was just ?meh? and needed more work, you?re going to leave with the same frustrations after Wrath. The poor dialogue and plot points that lead nowhere were just too much for me this time around. I couldn?t? wrap my head around seeing Zeues and Hades throw people around like rag dolls as they walk through the battlefield. That scene was sad and funny at the same time.

Wrath of the Titans is an?unnecessary?Clash sequel and hopefully the last.

Age of oldest rocks off by millions of years

Two of the solar system's best natural timekeepers have been caught misbehaving, suggesting that the accepted ages for the oldest known rock samples are off by a million years or more.

According to two new studies, a radioactive version of the element samarium decays much more quickly than previously thought, and different versions of uranium don't always appear in the same relative quantities in earthly rocks.

Both elements are used by geologists to date rocks and chart the history of events on our planet and in the solar system.

"If you have a critical event in Earth's history, something like an extinction event or a climate change shift or a meteorite impact, you need to know the absolute age with the most confidence," says Joe Hiess of the British Geological Survey, who led one of the studies. "In Earth sciences there's a need to be able to define what happened first and what happened second."

Chronometer shortage

Geochemists age rocks by measuring the ratio of radioactive isotopes ? versions of the same element with different atomic masses ? in them. Because the elements decay from one isotope, or element, to another at a constant rate, knowing the ratio in a particular rock gives its age.

Different elements and isotopes decay at vastly different rates. Scientists pick one that suits the timescale of interest. One of the favourites for tracing events in the early solar system, such as when the Earth's crust differentiated from its mantle or when the lava oceans on the moon solidified, is samarium-146, a hard shiny metal found in many minerals in the Earth's crust.

"In this time window, there are not many other chronometers," says Michael Paul of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Scientists have measured samarium-146's half-life ? the time taken for exactly half of a sample of atoms to decay radioactively - four times over the past 60 years, and got different answers each time. The two most recent measurements seemed to converge on a half-life of 103 million years, plus or minus 5 million years. But Paul and colleagues suspected that that number wasn't quite right. So they used a technique called accelerator mass spectrometry, which Paul says is less likely to be skewed by experimental errors.

Youthful meteorites

They found that the half-life is just 68 million years, 30 per cent shorter than thought. That means that every rock dated by samarium-146 decay ? which include some of the oldest on Earth and the moon, and even some Martian meteorites ? formed 20 million to 80 million years earlier than thought.

In a solar system that's 4.5 billion years old, tens of millions of years "is a lot", Paul says. "It means everything was forming more quickly."

There was a second, separate hiccup. Earth's oldest rocks are also aged using isotopes of uranium, which decay into isotopes of lead. Until a few years ago, geochemists assumed that the ratio of uranium-238 to uranium-235 was constant ? 137.88 ? in all rocks, and therefore the ratio of lead isotopes was the only measurement needed to date the rocks. But high-precision measurements of early materials found in meteorites or rocks formed in oceans showed differences.

Hiess and colleagues made the most wide-ranging study of uranium isotope ratios yet, using 45 samples of zircon from all over the world (pictured, above right). Zircon was one of the first minerals to solidify on Earth, it resists weathering and melting, and it holds on to uranium well, so it's a good candidate for dating old rocks.

Mass extinction

The team found that, while most of their samples had similar uranium ratios, some were wildly different.

"It's no longer safe to assume that it doesn't vary. It clearly does," says Gregory Brennecka of Arizona State University, who was not involved in either study. "Nobody thought that was the case five years ago."

The team produced a new, average figure for the uranium ratios. It shifts the ages of Earth's oldest rocks slightly, by just under a million years, Hiess says. The oldest rocks will have the biggest corrections: sediments that are 4.4 billion years old are now younger by 700,000 years. "To put it into a human perspective, if the Earth was only 18 years old, we have taken 1 day off the life of its oldest materials," Hiess says.

Now that scientists know they need to measure the ratio of uranium isotopes in all of their samples - as well as the ratio of lead isotopes - they'll be able to date rocks more accurately.

That's important for putting events in order. If a mass extinction occurred just before a meteorite struck, say, that paints a different picture than if the meteorite hit first.

"These are two big steps in improving the way we do geochronology, both in the solar system and terrestrial rocks," Brennecka says.

Today, many organizations are living with complex, overgrown computing platforms that are underutilized, take up valuable data center floor space, consume large amounts of power and cooling resources, and are not easy to manage.

?Organizations, of all sizes, are looking to implement cloud computing solutions to align efficiency and deliver business results. We have created a certification practice area with choice and flexibility that will solidify partners? value to the end customer. We invested the time and resources to fully understand the cloud solutions our partners need to provide in the market,? said Bob Skelley, executive director, Dell Global Certified Partner Program & Channel.

This new certification, available now in North America, in Europe 12 April and soon worldwide, is the result of many months of thoughtful collaboration with Dell?s partners and industry analysts to ensure it met the needs of many different types of cloud computing offerings, without over complication.

?Dell has continued to listen to us over the course of our partnership and the creation of this certification program. They took the time to understand our concerns as a global cloud provider and find a way to go to market together that strengthens both of our businesses and adds value to our customers,? said Dante Orsini, vice president business development, iland.

?Dell is also making it easy for partners to demonstrate their infrastructure-related skills by accepting their membership in channel programs of recognized vendors in technology areas of security, networking and virtualization,? said Anurag Agrawal, CEO, Techaisle.

Recent research by Dell Cloud Business Applications and Techaisle* showed that customers are looking for a trusted IT partner who has evaluated the right cloud applications for their businesses. Dell understands that sometimes that partner might be a value added reseller, and therefore has created this new certification.

?As a company that provides multiple cloud computing solutions, including Cloud Continuity, Replication, Secure Archive, and Backup, with Dell technology, we?re happy to see Dell recognizing that their channel partner needs vary. Dell has created multiple pillars to meet those needs that strategically align with our own cloud service offerings, enabling us to provide greater value to our customers and prospects alike,? said David Menendes, director of Business Development & Sales, Cloud and Hosted Services, VeriStor Systems, Inc.

The Cloud Services & Solutions Certification is comprised of three primary pillars in providing cloud services and solutions:

  • Cloud Builder ? The Partner that operates as a Cloud Builder will offer all the necessary services to design and develop a cloud infrastructure for their customers.
  • Cloud Provider ? A Cloud Provider will operate a cloud networking operating center (NOC) enabled with Dell technology to provide cloud services to their customers. These include: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) or Software as a Service (SaaS).
  • Cloud Service Enabler ? A Cloud Service Enabler acts as an aggregator or broker identifying, securing and integrating the appropriate set of cloud technologies and services from multiple sources and operates the resulting cloud for their customers through a set of managed services.

In addition to receiving Certified (Preferred or Premier) Partner level pricing and existing Preferred or Premier Partner benefits, partners who provide or wish to provide cloud services and solutions to their customers will receive additional benefits such as:

  • Preferred access to Dell?s current and future cloud services and solution offers
  • Attractive financing options to provide alternative acquisition options

Policy On High-Risk Biological Research Tightened

The Obama administration has announced a new policy to handle the risks posed by legitimate biological research that could, in the wrong hands, threaten the public.

The move comes in response to a huge debate over recent experiments on bird flu virus that got funding from the National Institutes of Health. Critics say the work created mutant viruses that could potentially be dangerous for people, or give terrorists a road map for making a bioweapon.

A committee that advises the government called the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB) is again meeting Friday to discuss those flu studies. Late last year, it recommended keeping some details secret. But a panel of experts, including flu virologists assembled by the World Health Organization, called for full publication.

The new policy is aimed at preventing this kind of controversy from happening in the future. It covers federally-funded research ? both ongoing work and future proposals. And it calls for special reviews of work that involves a list of 15 particularly nasty pathogens and toxins, including highly pathogenic bird flu virus, anthrax, and Ebola.

Funding agencies will have to evaluate certain kinds of experiments to see if they pose special risks. The idea is "to really upfront ask the questions: Should they be done? And if so, under what conditions should they be done," explains Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the NIH.

If an agency wants to fund an experiment that might yield potentially dangerous information, Fauci says, scientists could be asked to hold back on publishing details in order to receive funding.

Or, in some cases, the work might need to be classified. Fauci notes that the NIH does not do classified studies. "We would have to refer it to an agency that does classified research because we don't," he says.

He says the NIH has already taken a look at the ongoing projects it's funded and believes very few will need more scrutiny under the new policy.

"We're not talking about a very large number of studies that are going to get looked at again and might be altered," Fauci says. "We are talking about really, really a little bit more than a handful of studies among hundreds of grants."

And so far he says it doesn't look like even these raise significant concerns.

The new policy was welcomed by Richard Ebright, a professor of chemistry at Rutgers University who has long called for better control of biological research that could be misused.

"My first reaction was that this is an important step forward. An overdue step, but an important one," Ebright says.

He notes that a high-profile panel of experts recommended that the government set up a comprehensive oversight system back in 2004. "It was widely expected that a policy would be developed and announced perhaps in 2004, perhaps in 2005," Ebright says. "We're seeing it now perhaps six years late."

The policy will apply to government agencies ranging from the NIH to the Department of Agriculture to the Department of Homeland Security, he notes. He thinks this policy could prevent another controversy like the one currently swirling around bird flu experiments ? but only if agencies take real action.

"If the funding agencies propose only public relations or window dressing as risk mitigation," Ebright says, "then we'll have only public relations and window dressing and more of these problems arising."

Meanwhile, it's still unclear what will happen with the bird flu studies and the fight over how much information to make public.

The NSABB will wrap up its second meeting on this issue Friday and is expected to again offer advice on whether to publish the full details. But its recommendations are not binding on the government, the scientists or science journals.

Ron Fouchier of Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands, one of the scientists who did the work, spoke earlier this week on a live webcast of a science show called This Week in Virology.

"Regardless of what the U.S. government and Dutch government say, the authors and the journals are going to have the last vote on the publication issue," Fouchier said.

88% Footnote

All Critics (50) | Top Critics (23) | Fresh (44) | Rotten (6)

It's not easy to make Eliezer a sympathetic character, yet Bar-Aba's demonstration of fleeting vulnerability awakens inevitable, if equally brief, compassion.

Its energy and eccentricity assert themselves in funky graphics, imaginative camerawork and everyday moments of awkwardness and absurdity.

The film was a nominee for this year's foreign-language Oscar, and Cedar has a real grasp of how to create conflict and generate tension.

Writer/director Joseph Cedar is wise to the comedy of frustration and alert to the tragedy of hubris.

Writer and director Cedar does a great job of ratcheting up the tension by filtering the story through a simmering family rivalry.

Footnote is at its best when it gets into the cutthroat dynamics of academic competition, which are both horrifying and amusing.

To many viewers the picture might seem as forbidding as a dense scholarly tome. But give it a chance, and you might find it as pleasurable as a good novella.

Largely concerned with the prickliness and delicacy around legacy, and the attendant patrilineal complications...But it's as much about the egotism and dysfunction of academia, reflected in the complex personalities of Eliezer and Uriel.

Footnote finally gets back on track as Eliezer puts his philological skills to use, but it's too little, too late.

[A]cademic research has never been shown with such visual verve. . . [E]ach professor's personality and expertise [is put] in sharp relief both comic and poignant.

Eliezer's facial expressions consist of 'constipated' and 'slightly less constipated.'

Joseph Cedar's Footnote is easily one of the most exciting and creatively executed films about Jewish academics poring over the Torah ever made, excluding perhaps Joel and Ethan Coen's A Serious Man (which really does exist in a world of its own, anyway).

This material could, with just a few edits, be a serious and downbeat drama. But it's Cedar's knowing satire of academic politics (aided greatly by the sprightly and circus-like score by Amit Poznansky) that keeps the proceedings pungently bubbly.

Beef consumers urged to reconsider 'pink slime'

A company spokesman said business took a substantial hit when retailers decided they no longer wanted to use the product in their ground beef. (AP Photo/Beef Products Inc.)

(AP) ? The main producer of "pink slime" and the politicians defending the company will have a hard time persuading consumers and grocery stores to accept the product, even if the processed beef trimmings are as safe as the industry insists.

Three governors and two lieutenant governors plan to tour Beef Products Inc.'s plant in South Sioux City, Neb., Thursday afternoon to show their support for the company and the several thousand jobs it creates in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, South Dakota and Texas.

Beef Products, the main producer of the cheap lean beef made from fatty bits of meat left over from other cuts, has drawn extra scrutiny because of concerns about the ammonium hydroxide it treats meat with to slightly change the acidity of the beef and kill bacteria. The company suspended operations at plants in Texas, Kansas and Iowa this week, affecting 650 jobs, but it defends its product as safe.

While the official name is lean finely textured beef, critics dub it "pink slime" and say it's an unappetizing example of industrialized food production. That term was coined by a federal microbiologist who was grossed out by it, but the product meets federal food safety standards and has been used for years.

Larry Smith, with the Institute for Crisis Management public relations firm, said he's not sure the makers of pink slime ? including Cargill and BPI ? will be able to overcome the public stigma against their product at this point.

"I can't think of a single solitary message that a manufacturer could use that would resonate with anybody right now," Smith said.

The politicians who plan to tour the plant ? including Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback, Nebraska Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy and South Dakota Lt. Gov. Matt Michels ? all agree with the industry view that pink slime has been unfairly maligned and mislabeled.

"Our states proudly produce food for the country and the world ? and we do so with the highest commitment toward product safety," the governors said in a joint statement. "Lean, finely textured beef is a safe, nutritious product that is backed by sound science."

All the governors and lieutenant governors taking the tour want to eat some of the meat to demonstrate that it's safe, but Branstad's spokesman Tim Albrecht said it's possible BPI may not be able to serve them burgers Thursday. Regardless of whether the beef is available on the tour, Branstad plans to eat some at a community picnic this weekend.

Russell Cross, who is a former administrator of the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, said this product is getting a bad rap from a food safety standpoint.

"I'm not saying it's perfectly safe. Nothing is perfectly safe. All food is going to have bacteria in it. But this product has never been in question for safety," he said.

Cross said that ammonia is just one tool designed to reduce bacteria and help make the food safer. The process Cargill uses, by comparison, uses citric acid to achieve similar results to what BPI does with ammonia.

The finished product contains only a trace of ammonia, as do many other foods, and it's meant just to be an additional "hurdle for the pathogens," said Cross, who is now head of the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University.

The ammonium hydroxide BPI uses is also used in baked goods, puddings and other processed foods.

National Meat Association spokesman Jeremy Russell said if consumers insist on eliminating this product from ground beef, prices will go up and lean beef trimmings will have to be imported to replace it. The process of creating lean, finely textured beef yields about 12 to 15 pounds of additional meat per animal.

Russell said the pink slime outcry has already hurt BPI and other meat companies, and could eventually hurt the price that ranchers and feedlots receive for cattle.

"It's costing them and other companies a lot of money," Russell said.

BPI did get some good news Wednesday when Iowa-based grocer Hy-Vee said it would offer beef with and without pink slime because some consumers demanded the option. But larger grocery store chains, such as Kroger, have stuck with their decisions to stop offering beef with pink slime.

The real test for the future of BPI and pink slime may come later this year when school districts purchase meat from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for next school year. The USDA said earlier this month that it would give school districts a choice between 95 percent lean beef that contains pink slime and less-lean beef without it.

Russell said school districts will have to decide whether they're willing to spend roughly 16 percent more for beef without pink slime.

The USDA this year is contracted to buy 111.5 million pounds of ground beef for the National School Lunch Program. About 7 million pounds of that is from BPI.

Cash-for-access scandal leaves David Cameron's UK government reeling

Glenn Copus / EPA, File

Video aired over the weekend shows Conservative Party fundraiser Peter Cruddas, pictured above in 2005, telling undercover reporters: "200 grand ($317,000), 250 is premier league ... it'll be awesome for your business."

By msnbc.com and news services

LONDON -- The government of British Prime Minister David Cameron was reeling on Monday after a video emerged showing his Conservative Party's top fundraiser claiming to offer access to senior politicians in exchange for large donations.

In a sting operation, The Sunday Times (the newspaper operates behind a paywall) secretly videotaped fundraiser Peter Cruddas? discussing donations. The film showed him telling undercover reporters: "200 grand ($317,000), 250 is premier league ... it'll be awesome for your business."

If donors met Cameron, Cruddas claimed in the recording, "within that room, everything is confidential and you will be able to ask him practically any question that you want."

'We will listen to you'
He suggested they could even influence party policy, saying: "If you are unhappy about something, we will listen to you and we will put it into the policy committee at (the prime minister's official residence)."

In an interview with NBC's Brian Williams, Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain expressed the need to continue placing 'massive pressure' on Iran without resorting to military action.

Cameron responded by saying Cruddas' actions had been "completely unacceptable." Cruddas, a millionaire, resigned within hours of the report.

Obama, Cameron stand in united front

Cruddas made the remarks to two journalists he thought were international financiers and who were accompanied by a lobbyist.

Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain and President Barack Obama have a personal bond that helps define their working relationship. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

"Because we depend on donors so much we have to be careful" to show "you cannot buy access," he said according to The Sunday Times. But, he told the undercover reporters, if you donate "you could well be at a private house having a private dinner with?George Osborne, David Cameron, William Hague, the chairman around the table."

Osborne, the cabinet minister in charge of economic and financial matters, and Foreign Minister William Hague are both members of Cameron's center-right Conservative Party, which leads the governing coalition alongside the Liberal Democrats.

Embarrassing
The funding issue is embarrassing for Cameron, who promised before coming to power in May 2010 to curb corporate lobbying, saying it was the "next big scandal waiting to happen."

Following the report, Cameron admitted he had used his official home at 10 Downing Street to host dinners for Conservative donors.

Before David Cameron embarked on his trip to the United States, Brian Williams sat down with Britain's youngest prime minister in two centuries. Cameron talked about his relationship with President Obama, the war in Afghanistan and even Meryl Streep's portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in Iron Lady. Rock Center Anchor and Managing Editor Brian Williams reports.

The scandal threatened to undo Cameron's efforts to shake off his party's image of being too close to the interests of business and the rich as Britain undergoes an austerity program to cut its budget deficit.

"This is not the way that we raise money in the Conservative party, it should not have happened," said Cameron. "I will make sure that there is a proper party inquiry to make sure this can't happen again."

While there were also tax cuts for lower earners, the government's recent budget went down badly with many Britons, giving the impression the government was looking after the wealthy and cared little for those suffering rising unemployment and falling incomes as the economy struggles to recover from recession.

Despite mounting pressure after the recent civilian killings in Afghanistan, President Barack Obama and Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain reaffirmed their plans to slowly dial back their military presence. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

Previous attempts to reform the political funding system have foundered on the Conservatives' reluctance to cap donations from wealthy individuals and the opposition Labour Party's desire to avoid limits on contributions from unions.?

Msnbc.com's F. Brinley Bruton and Reuters contributed to this report.?

Govt finds airwaves for possible wireless data

(AP) ? The federal government has identified a large block of airwaves that can be freed to meet growing demand for movies, games and other data-intensive activities on smartphones and other mobile devices.

Wireless and technology companies have been clamoring for more spectrum. The 95 megahertz-wide band identified by the Commerce Department can support at least two new national wireless data networks.

But first, the government will have to find new homes for the agencies currently using that spectrum. That could involve sharing arrangements.

The government could spend as much as $18 billion over 10 years moving current users of the spectrum to new locations on the airwaves. The government said Tuesday that it hopes to make up for it by auctioning that spectrum to companies.

Tips in Maximizing Google Maps Optimization ? ClearSkys ...

As the new innovations on technology influence the consumer communities and their needs, the online marketplace and industry is also getting more competitive by the day. Therefore, every business needs to adapt to new changes to sustain itself amidst the stiff competition. Not doing so may cost much on the business side. Surprisingly, its solution is free and very easy. The use of Google Maps optimization may be a life-saver.

A research conducted by an independent online research company found out that most of the household checks merchandise over the internet before placing an order. They do this, as the research pointed out, to get more information about the products and services that the company offers. They usually start in search engines like Google, Bing or Yahoo.

Their findings further show that most of these people are ready and willing to make business transactions after finding out what they need online. Once they gathered enough information that they need, they will keep in touch with the company through on the contact details they found on the company?s website. This means that most of those who check the products online are indeed very serious in their search.

The research was done independently and in a statistically correct method. Therefore, the results are really reliable. That being said, there should be no reason for business people, especially those running small or medium enterprise, to not take advantage of this finding. Get to know some tips on how to effectively make use of the online tools and maximize its effects.

Perhaps the most crucial part in the preparation is setting up a website. This will serve as the representation of the company to the online community. Therefore, it must contain complete and accurate information about the company, such as the business name, history, its products or services and the contact details.

An effective way of luring people into the website is using pictures. True, a picture is worth a thousand words. This is a more effective way to relay what the company offers to the internet users than plain text only. Any regular person is more likely to be attracted to pictures than just words.

Including some video is another brilliant idea. This not only attracts more people, this also keeps their attention longer. Experts concur that a video has more impact when compared to still pictures and plain text. This is best represented by a larger portion of people who prefer watching television all day long than reading a book for an hour or two.

While attracting visitors is very important in an online business that is just the first phase. The next thing to be concerned about is how to make them want to come back. The easiest solution for this is providing discount coupons, promotions and any other perks one may think of. With this, the visitors may check in every once in a while for something new.

Finally, include the website in the listing. Doing so does not require any fee and is utterly important to maximize the Google Maps optimization. Through this, the website will show up first when a prospective buyer uses a search engine to look for products or services that a company offers.

(AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI's arrival in Mexico on Friday will reveal his ability to communicate with a people whose passionate adoration of his predecessor threatens to overshadow the pontiff's message of peace and continuing faith for a country shaken by horrific drug violence, the Vatican's ambassador pledged on the eve of the trip.

Pope John Paul II was greeted with ecstatic scenes on each of his five trips to Mexico, whose faithful today consider him practically one of the country's patron saints.

In contrast, there was little visible excitement about the more austere and less charismatic Benedict less than 24 hours before his arrival in Guanajuato, a deeply conservative and highly observant state in sun-baked central Mexico. Campgrounds with a capacity for hundreds of thousands of pilgrims were virtually empty. Traffic on the highways leading to the sites of the pope's visit didn't appear heavier than on an ordinary weekday night.

Carlos Aguiar, president of the Mexican Episcopal Conference, said he expected the faithful to begin arriving Friday.

The papal envoy, Christophe Pierre, said Benedict's visit would allow Mexicans to "discover the pope" and "his ability to communicate, to speak deeply, but simply."

There were some stirrings of enthusiasm about Benedict's first trip to Mexico. About 60 people who described themselves as Catholics unaffiliated with any church burned brush to create a neater vista along a section of the pope's route from the airport to the Catholic school where he will spend his three nights in Mexico.

"It's the first time a pope has visited our community. We're excited," Maria Belen, a 36-year-old homemaker, said as she swept inches of powdery dust and gravel off a sidewalk.

Farther down the highway, young men and women sold flags in the yellow-and-white Vatican colors, although few motorists stopped to buy them.

The biggest crowd appeared to be the thousands gathered outside an evangelical Protestant church sitting at the highway exit leading to Bicentennial Park, where Benedict will deliver Mass on Sunday.

"We are not Roman Catholics. We are the Light of the World Church," a huge banner announced to passing motorists.

Church spokesman Ezequiel Zamora said the convention of young missionaries had been planned long before the pope's visit was announced, and the evangelical church had no intention of upstaging the pontiff.

Guanajuato is 93.8 percent Catholic, the highest percentage in Mexico, but Protestant and evangelical denominations have made deeper inroads in other parts of the country, particularly along the northern and southern borders.

The last time a pope visited Mexico, more than 1 million believers cheered and wept in the streets of Mexico City. Dancers dressed in Aztec costumes shook rattles and blew conch shells inside the cathedral where John Paul II canonized the first Indian saint in the Americas.

A decade later, Benedict comes to a church battling to overcome painful setbacks that include legalized abortion and gay marriage in the capital of the most populous Catholic country in the Spanish-speaking world.

It is also a nation grappling with a drug war that has spread fear into once-tranquil regions such as Guanajuato.

"There is a very immense peace that we need in Mexico because of the insecurity," said Marcela Arguello, a 26-year-old housewife who said she planned to stand along the route of the papal motorcade through the city of Leon, the state's largest city.

Mexico has been traumatized by the deaths of more than 47,000 people in drug-related violence in less than six years, and while Guanajuato is far from major drug trafficking routes, the shadow of the conflict looms even here.

"Yes, he'll talk about violence, we can't ignore that, but I can tell you as a representative of the Holy Father that there's much more than violence in Mexico," Pierre said.

"The Holy Father, in the name of God, comes to remind, to ask people not to lose their path in life," Pierre added.

A recent series of apparently gang-related shootings has killed some two dozen people in Guanajuato state, which is noted for leather goods, auto factories and picturesque tourist towns.

Yet even the drug cartels profess to be people of faith. At least 11 banners signed by the pseudo-religious Knights Templar gang were found in five municipalities of Guanajuato last week, including in Leon, offering peace during the papal trip.

As many as 300,000 people are expected to gather for the Sunday Mass, a large turnout even in a state that is so heavily Catholic and a stronghold of President Felipe Calderon's conservative National Action Party, which has roots in militantly Catholic organizations that formed decades ago to challenge an atheistic federal government.

The hacker group Anonymous in Mexico crashed at least two of the websites for Benedict's visit to Mexico on Thursday, claiming his trip is a political move to support the president's party.

Anonymous Mexico said in a video posted on social media sites that the pope's visit will cost Mexicans money that could be better spent on the poor, and is meant to support the PAN in the July 1 presidential election. PAN candidate Josefina Vazquez Mota trails front-runner Enrique Pena Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party by at least 10 percentage points in most polls.

The official campaign season starts at the end of this month.

The pope's "visit comes precisely at the start of the electoral campaigns," said the faceless Anonymous figure in the video. "The PAN will take this as a political weapon to win the votes of millions of Catholics in Mexico."

Guanajuato's constitution declares that life begins at conception and bars abortion with extremely limited exceptions. Seven women were jailed there in 2010 for the deaths of their newborns and later released. The women said they had miscarriages, not abortions.

Benedict's church is encouraging more such laws across Mexico, reacting partly to the legalization of gay marriage and abortion in Mexico City, the cultural and political center of the country.

At the same time, church leaders are fighting to overcome their share of the global child sex-abuse scandal, which destroyed the reputation of the most influential Mexican figure in the church.

The Rev. Marcial Maciel founded the Legionaries of Christ order, which John Paul II praised as a model of rectitude. But a series of investigations forced the order to acknowledge in 2010 that Maciel had sexually abused seminarians and fathered three children. Church documents released in a book this week reveal the Vatican had been told of Maciel's drug abuse and pederasty decades ago.

Calderon's government is backing legislation that would end now often ignored restriction on religious observances in public places, as well as a ban on religious participation in politics.

If approved, it could lay the groundwork for laws allowing church ownership of media and openly religious education on school property, said political analyst John Ackerman at the legal research institute at Mexico's National Autonomous University.

"This opens the door for the church to start using public spaces," Ackerman said. "It has the full intention to be interpreted as occupying public spaces with religious ceremonies, that's what's on the table."
