March 3, 2012

MANCHESTER, N.H.- With just eight seniors and juniors returning, the Southern New Hampshire University softball team will look for key contributions from their talented freshman and sophomores, along with the experience and leadership of the upperclassmen returners to improve on last season's 19-26 record. The Penmen finished with a 17-13 Northeast-10 Conference record and advanced to the NE-10 Conference tournament, where they would lose in the first round to fifth-seeded UMass Lowell. The SNHU softball team has been picked to finish eighth in the NE-10 coaches' preseason poll.

The Penmen key returners include juniors Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.) who had a team-best .362 batting average and led the team with 47 hits, and Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, Mass.) who earned 22 runs and connected for 39 hits last season.

?Head Coach Deb Robitaille enters into her seventh season with the Penmen, while naming senior Amanda Barton (Franklin, N.H.) and junior Cheney as team co-captains. The Penmen will seek to replace the power-hitting graduating class that consisted of the top three homerun getters in the 2010-11 season, as well as the team ERA leader, with the help of the returners and also a promising recruiting class of five newcomers.

With just two lone seniors this season, the Penmen will look to their experience in order to carry them. Seniors Jen Garloff (Lebanon, Pa.)??and Barton are both four year members of the softball team. Garloff looks to close out her senior season with the Penmen in the circle. Seeing action in just one contest last season, Garloff will look to seek more time in the circle season. In her sophomore season, Garloff made 22 pitching appearances for the Penmen, while posting a 5.25 ERA and a 6-9 record.

Co-captain Barton saw action in 44 games last season, making 39 starts in right field and five starts in the circle, totaling 12 runs, 29 hits, and 6 RBIs for the Penmen. The juniors will return as the largest class, as six juniors appear the roster this season. In addition to Cheney, the junior class also returns Kate Stanley (Kingston, Mass.) who totaled three homeruns last season. Stanley, one of three Penmen to see action and start in all 45 games, batted .207 with 28 hits, including five doubles and three homeruns. She also had 11 RBIs and finished third on the team in runs with 19 on the season.

Jenkins was second on the team in doubles with seven and finished the season with two homeruns. She would total 17 RBIs along with a team second best 39 hits for the Penmen.? Douillette, who had three runs and four hits, will look to see action behind the plate this upcoming season. Classmate Nicole Newell (Abington, Mass.), appeared in the Penmen lineup 10 times while earning five starts. Newell would total one run, two hits, and one RBI. Newell will look to see more action in the outfield this season.

The Penmen also return a talented sophomore class, all who were all key contributors as season ago. Pitcher Dolores Mattice (Schenectady, N.Y.), will be the top-returning pitcher for the Penmen this season. Posting a 3.81 ERA and an 8-7 record, Mattice saw action in 24 games while making 16 starts. She had the lone save on the season for the Penmen while giving up just 118 hits and 60 runs.

She totaled 11 hits, six runs, two doubles and three RBIs, while batting .268 at the plate. Metta, a pinch runner for the Penmen, appeared in 21 games while scoring five runs.

The Penmen welcome five newcomers this season. Pitcher Ali Maloof (Norwood, Mass.) finished her senior season with a 12-1 record in the circle with a .35 ERA, while batting .495 at the plate. Maloof was a three-sport athlete at Norwood High School where she served as captain of her softball team her senior year. She finished her career with a 35-4 record and earned Boston Globe Player of the Year honors as a junior.

Fellow freshmen pitcher Rebecca Sherwood (Braintree, Mass.) will also look to get some time in the circle for the Penmen.
