NSIA's Hamilton Named To NOAA's Marine Fisheries Advisory ...

By Andy Walgamott, on March 6th, 2012

The head of the Northwest Sportfishing Industry Association has been appointed to a federal panel advising the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration on marine fisheries.

Liz Hamilton of Oregon City was one of seven new members named earlier this month by Secretary of Commerce John Bryson to the Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee. MAFAC advises the secretary on all living marine resource matters that are the responsibility of the Department of Commerce.

?The era of marine spatial planning, ocean energy issues and ecosystem system-based fishery management plans is a particularly important and exciting time to work with the Secretary of Commerce and head of NOAA Fisheries to ensure that ocean health and sport fishing access remain intertwined and not mutually exclusive," she said. "It has been the work directed and supported by the NSIA board that has led to this appointment.? I am honored and excited for the opportunity!?

Hamilton, a long time sportfishing advocate, joins the 20 other committee members who represent a spectrum of commercial and recreation fishing, environmental, academic, state, tribal, con?sumer and other related interests.

Other new MAFAC appointees include Newport, Ore., attorney Michele Longo Eder, owner/principal of commercial fish harvesting and seafood businesses, and Micah McCarty, chairman of the Makah Tribal Council and a treaty fisherman, tribal artist, and activist.

In recent years, MAFAC helped develop the new Commerce and NOAA aquaculture policies, established a Recreational Fishing Working Group to help NOAA engage more effectively with recreational stakeholders, and provided input on implementation of the new National Ocean Policy. MAFAC's report, ?Vision 2020: The Future of U.S. Marine Fisheries? helped shape NOAA?s perspective on the upcoming challenges and opportunities in managing our nation's living marine resources.

Hamilton is also on the Habitat Committee of the Pacific Fishery Management Council and is an advisor to the Pacific State Ma?rine Fisheries Commission.

NSIA reps over 300 sportfishing businesses in the region, including Northwest Sportsman, and was founded in 1993 by Hamilton.
