Kings of Leon Bassist Jared Followill's Weekend Wedding: ?It?s the Biggest Step I?ve Ever Taken?

Jared Followill is officially off the market!

The 25-year-old Kings of Leon bassist is set to marry his model girlfriend Martha Patterson on Saturday. Followill confirmed the weekend nuptials on Twitter:

?Today I get married. It?s the biggest step I?ve ever taken,? he wrote.

Patterson also joined on the Twitter wedding announcement, writing ?Marry my best friend today. I?m the luckiest girl in the world.?

The pair got engaged last spring, only after a few months of dating.

?Jared proposed to Martha on Apr. 11 at his home in Nashville and we?re all excited for the newly engaged couple,? a rep told Just Jared?at the time.

The rocker proposed with a custom designed 4-carat cushion-cut diamond set on a diamond-covered band. Followill was previously linked to Twilight?star Ashley Greene.

With Kings of Leon currently on hiatus, Followill has been busy with his side project Smoke & Jackal, a new group with fellow Nashville rocker Nick Brown of Mona.

?I knew that I would go a little bit stir-crazy just not doing anything and not having any artistic outlets,? Followill told Rolling Stone earlier this month.

?I think it was important for us to create a new identity and have our own sound,? he added.

Meanwhile, Followill?s older brother Caleb has been busy with his own side project: his baby girl with wife and Victoria?s Secret model Lily Aldridge. The pair welcomed their daughter back in June.

Why Do Oil Companies Favor the GOP, When They Fare Better Under Dems?

The fossil-fuel industry has long given more money to Republicans than Democrats, but in this presidential campaign it has skewed far further: from 2-to-1 or 4-to-1 in the past, the ratio of campaign donations is now at 8-to-1?in the Republicans? favor (see chart above). Yet the industry has in fact fared better under recent Democratic than Republican presidents, according to a new investment bank report.

In a Sept. 27 note to clients, Oppenheimer?s Fadel Gheit writes that each party has held the White House for half of the last 24 years. Under Democrats, the exchange-traded index of leading oil and gas companies, called XOI, rose an average of 9 percent a year. Under Republicans, the XOI rose 7 percent annually.

ExxonMobil specifically (the industry?s second-largest contributor to Republican causes, with $1.8 million poured into the campaign) has had a 10 percent average annual rise in its share price under Democrats, and 7 percent under Republicans, Gheit writes. (Consumers have fared better under Democrats as well: crude oil prices rose 10 percent a year under Republicans over the last quarter century, compared with 7 percent under Democrats. Natural gas prices rose 6 percent a year under Republicans, compared with just 2 percent under Democrats.)

More From Quartz

The great rivalry in sports history: labor versus capital

How Mario Draghi bluffed the markets

Steve Jobs wouldn?t have apologized for Apple Maps

Why the US-Chinese row over wind farms is (mostly) a lot of hot air

Yet the industry and its supporters have spent $31.6 million to support Republicans and unseat Democrats in this election cycle, or 89 percent of the $42.6 million spent on all candidates, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a Washington-based watchdog group. And that is only direct spending on candidates. In addition, the industry and its supporters have poured?$153 million into television ads defending oil, gas and coal, compared with $41 million by clean energy advocates, according a study by The New York Times.

The industry is not only picking on Obama?since 1990, oil and gas companies and their employees have focused some 78 percent of their political contributions on Republican candidates, or $239 million of the $319 million that they spent.

So what explains the industry?s election contribution decisions? In the current election cycle, Republican candidates generally support opening up closed federal land and coastal areas to wide-scale oil and gas drilling; they also by and large support coal mining. Obama and Democrats generally have been big backers of federal support for renewable fuels such as solar and wind, in order to scale back U.S. consumption of fossil fuels.

But that is not everything. There is also ?visceral disdain, beyond dislike? for Obama, John Hofmeister, the former president of Shell USA, told me. ?He?s basically viewed as a know-nothing, empty suit by the industry, using whatever language he needs to so that people think he?s engaged and doing something,? Hofmeister said in an email exchange. ?In meetings with energy executives that I have all the time, it doesn?t take much to get people to a level of angst about Obama that some spit and some just curse.?

With polls showing Obama holding a consistent and growing lead over Republican Mitt Romney, industry leaders are preparing for what comes next, which, if the president does win re-election, apparently will be continued staunch opposition to his energy policies. ?[Oil and gas industry] people will grind their teeth, curse in private and public, say to one another that they?ll have to open their wallets to work against Obama?s efforts, and basically wait him out,? Hofmeister said. ?No one expects him to reach out in victory and offer to work together on the nation?s future energy.?

The industry will take the long view. ?The industry will concentrate on what it does [best]?fight the good fight to resist Obama and his directions,? said Hofmeister, ?and come out the other end in reasonably good shape with momentum on their side because the public will be so upset at the lack of energy leadership that gets us to where we?ll be.?

Yemeni government official escapes suicide attack

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Yemeni security officials say a government official who once led a local militia against al-Qaida in the country's south has survived a suicide attack. One of his guards died of wounds sustained in the attack.

The officials said the attacker detonated his explosives Saturday near the vehicle of Mohammed Aidarous, the head of Lawder district in Abyan province. The officials said the explosion left 10 wounded, including three civilians. One guard later died of his wounds in a hospital in Aden. Aidarous had led a local militia which fought alongside Yemen's military to drive al-Qaida militants out of their district.

It was the fourth assassination attempt against Aidarous, who was unharmed.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Real Estate Week: Homes Prices a Hot Topic; Zillow Under Fire; Tight

Image of toy housesHere?s a look at news this week of interest to homebuyers, home sellers, and the home-curious:

STOP THE PRESSES! JULY PRICE REPORT!

The data is old and the conclusions obvious, but business journalists gave top billing this week to the latest S&P Case-Shiller Home Price report, which declared that home prices rose modestly in July in the nation?s 20 largest metro areas.

Never mind that other researchers have already released data for August (a modest uptick in prices nationwide), and September results will be announced next week (same as August, according to forecasts). But, for the record: July home prices were up 1.2 percent, year over year, in the top 20 markets.

Pardon our sarcasm, but the monthly Case-Shiller reports offers scant help where it matters most ? in local real estate markets where actual prices can vary wildly from national averages. For example, we reported last week that Bay Area home prices posted solid gains in August: from 2.3 percent in Marin County to 15.2 percent in Contra Costa County, for an average increase of 10.8 percent. Take that, Case-Shiller!

BIG JUMP IN NEW-HOME PRICES

More news on home prices: The median price of new, single-family homes sold spiked 11.2 percent in August from July, a new record, according to a U.S. Commerce Department report. Annually, prices rose 17 percent, a welcome sign that homebuilders are busy and buyers are eager.

WHY ARE PRICES RISING?

The Wall Street Journal?s real estate blog answers five questions central to any discussion of the recent rise in?home prices. It?s brief, smart, and worth a look.

A CAUTIONARY REPORT ON HOME PRICES

Here?s the final word on homes prices this week, with?a caveat that the Bay Area real estate scene is markedly different from what?s described here. That said, CNNMoney posted data from the research firm Fiserv suggesting U.S. home prices, on average,?won?t return to their 2007 peak for another 11 years ? add another three years to that?for California homes (2026!).

Fiserv based its report on many assumptions that may not prove true. It assumes prices will rise 3.7 percent a year, or 4.4 percent in California, and its broad averages don?t allow for local variations. We noted above that home prices in the Bay Area rose an average 10.8 percent in August, year over year, and even that average varied widely from county to county.

It?s true that it may take several years before many Bay Area?communities see 2007 prices again, but our real estate professionals in San Francisco, for example, tell us that prices today are very nearly there. Our advice: Pay attention to local experts, not statisticians.

ZILLOW STOCK?S WILD RIDE

Shares of the online real estate search service Zillow took a wild ride this week after a stock analyst issued a scathing report on the company?s business model. The report from Citron Research declared that Zillow is dramatically overvalued compared with other online real-estate sites and pointed to a steady stream of insider sales.

Zillow shares dropped nearly 7 percent on Tuesday before mostly recovering Wednesday after the company forcefully denied the report?s conclusions.

PENDING HOME SALES REPORT

The California Association of Realtors said pending home sales rose 2.7 percent from July to August, but year-over-year sales were down 2 percent because of the continued?shortage of housing inventory across the state. The lack of supply sent the share of equity sales to its highest level in four years, the C.A.R. said.

Hollywood scriptwriter David S Goyer says ... - This is South Wales

HOLLYWOOD scriptwriter David S Goyer says Swansea will become a key filming destination.

The US screenwriter and director, whose writing credits include the Dark Knight Rises and Blade, believes the 265,000 square feet of stage at Bay studios in Fabian Way is a huge draw.

  1. Da Vinci?s Demons writer David S Goyer on the set at Margam Castle

Mr Goyer, who first visited Wales on a bike trip when he was 16, is shooting the historical fantasy Da Vinci's Demons at locations in Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot, including Margam Castle, along with the studios.

It is the first joint production from the premiere cable channel Starz Entertainment and BBC Worldwide Productions and tells a story based on Leonardo da Vinci's life.

Mr Goyer said he was enjoying the experience of filming in Wales ? despite the bad weather.

He said: "Wales is becoming more of a filming destination.

"It has happened in Cardiff with Doctor Who and I could see that happen and there being another centre in Swansea.

"The facility in Fabian Way (in the former Visteon plant) is more than 250,000 feet."

He said the production companies behind the project were impressed with what they had seen so far.

"I would like to (film another series) ? they (the producers) are very pleased with the first three episodes," he added.

"I am having the time of my life. "Wales has been fantastic, but very wet ? it's been a challenging shoot. We had the worst weather in history in the episodes I was working on."

He added: "But I love it, it's beautiful here."

Mr Goyer said he would not have been able to film the series in the US as it isn't home to castles as Wales is.

The production has already given the local economy a ?20 million cash injection and out of that figure a total of ?12 million covers the cost of the wage bill.

A total of ?750,000 has been spent on materials on set and the show has created 3,300 temporary jobs along with 163 permanent jobs.

Da Vinci's Demons stars English actor Tom Riley, who has previously appeared in Monroe and Bouquet of Barbed Wire, as the young Da Vinci and Laura Haddock, from Upstairs Downstairs, will play Lucrezia Donati, the mistress of Lorenzo Medici and lover of Leonardo da Vinci.

Mr Goyer, who is no stranger to working on films about comic book heroes, says the Da Vinci story would have a modern twist.

"We are treating Da Vinci as if he was the first superhero," he said. "It's one part Da Vinci and one part Sherlock Holmes ? there's a lot more action than people expect.

"The Da Vinci story we have is based on historical fact and has a compressed timeline."

He revealed viewers can expect the show to be filled with mystery and sexual intrigue.

Are you a commitment phobe? | eHarmony Relationship Advice

Do you struggle to get past the first couple of months with someone? Does the mention of exclusivity, meeting their family or moving in together send shivers down your spine? If so it could be that you are a commitment phobe ? read on to find out more.

A commitment phobe is someone who struggles to make a commitment particularly in intimate relationships. It may seem to be totally irrational ? you really love the person you are with; get on great; can see a future with them but as soon as you feel yourself being pulled in the direction of a lasting commitment something powerful holds you back and you start to feel:

Like you?ve got itchy feet ? as if there are other possibilities just around the corner and if you tie yourself down to this one person you may miss out on a fantastic opportunity somewhere else. Other people and possibilities start to seem much more attractive.

Irritable ? the very person that you loved so much last week becomes intensely irritating, specifically little things like the way they dress ? their personal habits that used to seem cute and endearing now drive you crazy. Your mind is in a negative spin and before long everything becomes so irritating it is so painful that you feel that you have no choice but to leave.

Negative ? in your head you start to trash everything about the relationship ? they don?t really understand you; your tastes are too different; sex might be better with someone else ? every part of you seems tuned into collecting evidence to prove that this relationship is no good for you (or your partner) and you would be better off on your own or with someone else. This can make you feel bad because your partner has no idea of the negativity that is going on in your head and strangely you feel like you don?t want to share it because that might mean the problems could be sorted out and you feel that you need to leave.

The basis of all of this is FEAR ? fear of commitment. The good news is that it doesn?t necessarily mean that you are with the wrong person and should break up with them ? it would be far better to stay and face the fear. If you don?t work it out in this relationship it is just going to come up again in the next one.

The fear could come from many sources. Maybe you have issues from childhood as a result of parenting that was not stable or emotionally supportive. Perhaps you have been hurt in the past by someone who you committed to completely and they abused your trust or maybe you have feelings of low self worth and believe that if you get deeper into the relationship the person will see the ?real you? and won?t love you any more so you jump before you are pushed.

There are many reasons why someone becomes a commitment phobe and for those worst affected the fear of being tied down, even to a date, can make them feel claustrophobic and trapped.

Some of the most obvious signs that you are commitment phobe are:

  • You sabotage good relationships for the smallest of reasons.
  • As soon as you start thinking negatively about the relationship it seems to careen out of control and before you know it you have already left in your head.
  • You hate to be tied down ? you say yes to things but as soon as you are committed you try to find reasons not to do them.
  • You are flaky about timekeeping and get defensive when you are challenged.
  • You only ever have short term relationships that start off very intense and passionate but go cold overnight.
  • You are very busy and often over-committed leaving little time for your relationship
  • You feel lonely and desperately want to be with someone but don?t trust your own feelings because it all can turn so quickly.
  • You often fall in love with people who are unattainable.

What to do

Like any other emotional problem that affects your relationships it can be very difficult to overcome on your own and in cases where this has happened repeatedly and become a pattern it is a good idea to seek professional help to find out what is going on.

If you decide to tackle it on your own some useful things to try are:

  • W hen you start thinking negatively about the relationship each day write down 5 things you appreciate about your partner until the negativity passes.
  • Talk about how you are feeling either with a close friend or family member
  • Make small commitments and keep them ? try to be 5 minutes early for dates, go away for weekends and don?t let yourself be rushed along too quickly.
  • Tell your partner you have a fear of commitment but that you are willing to change, they are sure to understand and hopefully together you will be able to work it through.

Colorado "Frozen Dead Guy" festival to go on with or without corpse

DENVER (Reuters) - The frozen corpse that has inspired a Colorado town's whimsical "Frozen Dead Guy Days" celebration may soon be put on ice somewhere else, but festival organizers said the body's removal will not have a chilling effect on the annual event.

"We will continue on whether or not Bredo Morstoel is here," festival owner Amanda MacDonald said Wednesday of the man whose body has been packed in dry ice outside Nederland, Colorado, since 1993.

A financial dispute between Morstoel's grandson, Tryve Bauge, and the man hired to replenish the dry ice on a monthly basis, Bo Shaffer, has led to Bauge threatening to move his grandfather's body out of Colorado.

Each month for 18 years, Shaffer has hauled 1,700 pounds (770 kg) of dry ice - carbon dioxide in solid form - to a remote shed above Nederland to keep the corpse of Morstoel at minus-24 degrees Fahrenheit (minus-31 degrees Celsius) and in a state of cryonic suspension.

But Shaffer said he quit after Bauge refused to pay for the rising costs of fuel and ice, which has made the endeavor unprofitable.

"It takes two of us to make the four-hour roundtrip," Shaffer told Reuters. "My quitting is the only way to get his (Bauge's) attention."

Bauge, who lives in Norway, did not immediately return an email message seeking comment about the dispute. But he told the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper that he is exploring the possibility of moving his grandfather to the Cryonics Institute in Michigan.

[Related: City removes park benches to stop disrespectful teens]

Cryonics is the process of freezing and storing a corpse to prevent decomposition in anticipation of medical technology that could bring the dead back to life. Liquid nitrogen, which is far colder than dry ice, is typically used for cryonic preservation.

Morstoel died of heart failure in his native Norway in 1989, and Bauge had his grandfather's body frozen and transported to a cryonics facility in California. Ultimately he had the corpse moved to Nederland, where Bauge lived at the time.

When Bauge was deported because of an expired visa, he hired Shaffer to act as an unofficial caretaker.

COFFIN RACES, HEARSE PARADE

At first, townspeople in the mountain village 17 miles southwest of Boulder, Colorado, were aghast at the thought of a frozen body being stored in their midst.

But they ultimately embraced the idea of an annual festival surrounding its most famous, albeit deceased, resident.

The late-winter celebration features activities such as coffin races, a hearse parade, a frozen salmon toss and snow beach volleyball. There are even tours to the site of Morstoel's sarcophagus, although his remains are not open for viewing.

MacDonald said the festival attracts about 10,000 people over its three-day run, which is held in early March, and has taken on a life of its own, with or without its namesake dead guy.

[Related: Boise police on alert over neo-Nazi music festival]

The nonprofit Cryonics Institute in Clinton Township, Michigan, was founded by the late physicist Robert Ettinger, who was known as a pioneer in cryonics.

His son, David Ettinger, said by telephone that privacy concerns prevent him from discussing any potential patients. However, he did say ideal candidates for suspension are people who have recently died.

Such was the case with his father, he said, who was prepared for the procedure in the days before his death in 2011 at the age of 92.

"We've never had a patient presented to us under those circumstances," he said of a corpse that has been packed in dry ice for nearly two decades.

The institute has about 100 suspended corpses, and charges a one-time $35,000 fee and $120 annually for "human cryopreservation."

Oil giant's CEO: Risks of Arctic drilling too high

By NBC News wire services

LONDON -- Energy companies should not drill for crude oil in Arctic waters because the environmental risks are too high, Total SA Chief Executive Officer Christophe de Margerie told the Financial Times?on Wednesday.

The newspaper, which operated behind a pay wall, described de Margerie's comments as the first time a major oil company has publicly criticized offshore exploration in the Arctic.

The risk of an oil spill in such an environmentally sensitive area was simply too high, according to de Margerie.

"Oil on Greenland would be a disaster. A leak would do too much damage to the image of the company," he said.

Earlier this month, Gazprom OAO delayed the start of oil production at its Prirazlomnoye field, the first Russian Arctic offshore oil deposit to be developed, due to safety concerns.

A report from the National Snow and Ice Data Center shows the Arctic's melting ice is resulting in the lowest sea ice levels since satellites started tracking the measurements in 1979. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

The Arctic is seen as a key source in the next decade for Russia, the world's largest oil producer.

Plans to drill for crude in the Arctic have raised concerns among environmental activists, who launched protests last month at the offshore platform that operates the Gazprom project.

Shell admits Arctic drilling defeat, for now

Earlier this month Royal Dutch Shell PLC had to abandon hope of drilling into oil reservoirs in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska after its containment dome was damaged during tests.

Environmentalists pointed to those setbacks as more evidence that offshore drilling in the Arctic is too risky.

Sen. Mark Begich, (D-AK), discusses what a delay in Arctic drilling means for the future of oil prices and exploration in the U.S.

"Letting Shell do top-hole drilling and other preparatory activities when they are clearly not ready to respond to an oil spill is like telling a drunk driver that as long as he stays off the freeway everything should be OK," said Rebecca Noblin, Alaska director of the Center for Biological Diversity, after Shell won approval to carry out additional preliminary drilling off Alaska -- this time in the Beaufort Sea.

More environment news on NBCNews.com

The remoteness, the extreme cold and the threat from ice floes crushing equipment pile more costs on top of those imposed by restrictions on drilling during hunting and breeding seasons and requirements for expensive emergency equipment to be on standby.

And industry executives acknowledge that the economics of Arctic exploration is also shaky.

NYT: China joins nations seeking treasure in warming Arctic

Nevertheless, Shell and other international oil and gas companies are moving into the Arctic because of increasing resource nationalism and dwindling production in their traditional heartlands of the Middle East, South America, the United States, the North Sea and elsewhere.

Persistently high oil prices are also making the huge engineering challenges of working in such a hostile environment look more worthwhile. In addition, the climate change that burning hydrocarbons contributes to has pushed back the ice, opening up access to, and markets for, the hydrocarbons there.

Arctic sea ice reaches new low, shattering record set 3 weeks earlier

The prize of success could be huge. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that some 30 percent of the world's undiscovered natural gas and 13 percent of its oil is waiting to be exploited in the Arctic.

Dashboard beta leaks new Xbox Music Pass Cloud playlists and early pricing revealed

Appearing closely after Zune's end, we've been sent these images of what Microsoft's likely to offer in Xbox Music. Matching those early rumors, it looks like some cloud-linked features will make an appearance in the form of synchronized playlists, while the service will offer a free half-month trial alongside paid subscriptions. Prices are currently set at £8.99 ($15) for a month, while £89.90 ($146) will offer a year's unlimited access to "millions" of tracks, to stream and download across Xbox, Windows, and Windows Phone. The system's UI seems to borrow its looks from Windows' Metro tile-based style, with a very similar keyboard that appears to be navigable from your Xbox controller. Take a tour of the gallery below and expect to hear more specifics ahead of the big Windows 8 launch next month.

Letters | Health care, the presidential race, pets - KansasCity.com

Health care in Kansas

Senate President Steve Morris recently stated every Senate Republican supported the Health Care Freedom Act, a bill that amends state statute. He conveniently omitted the more important proposal to amend the Kansas Constitution, the Kansas Health Care Freedom Amendment, which would have allowed a vote on this measure. The amendment was held up for three years in the Senate Judiciary Committee by Republican leadership until finally a vote was scheduled for the floor this year.Once the debate began, a motion was made to send the bill back to committee, thus avoiding debate. The motion, which failed, was supported by Republican senators Pete Brungardt, Jay Emler, Jeff Longbine, Carolyn McGinn, Steve Morris, Tim Owens, Roger Reitz, Vicki Schmidt, Ruth Teichman, Dwayne Umbarger and John Vratil. In 2010, Sen. Mary Pilcher-Cook moved to pull the amendment out of committee, where it was being held up by Senate leadership. She simply wanted to debate the measure, but her motion failed, with many Republicans, including Morris, opposing it.I find it odd that Sen. Morris encourages citizens to vote, while he worked to deny Kansans the opportunity to cast a ballot on this important amendment designed to fight the federal takeover of our health care system. Derrick Sontag TopekaConsumer-driven U.S.A few recent letter writers have touched on an important economic point: Our president and our Congress do not create permanent, sustained private-sector jobs.During this election cycle, however, we?re hearing people tout themselves as job creators. They?re in local races in commercial after commercial and stump speech after stump speech. It feeds voter expectations, and it?s probably impolitic for any candidate to do otherwise. But the reality is that outside of instituting more stimulus programs or a government expansion or declaring another war, government is not really the remedy for jobs, especially private-sector jobs.Consumers are the remedy. Simply put: Consumers create jobs, and when consumers decide to spend more on products and services, more businesses will hire.No one builds a warehouse and fills it with new employees and equipment without there first being consumers generating a demand along with a predictable income stream. The remedy is not a political candidate. It is us as a collective of consumers, confident in our own country and the future and moving things forward as always. Robert Barnes Kansas CityObama treated unfairlyConservative radio host Mark Levin says this of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney:He loves his country, he believes in America, he does not want to fundamentally change this country, he is religious and he is a family man, and naturally President Barack Obama is just the opposite of all of these virtues.Levin?s hatred of Mr. Obama spews through his microphone every night. If Levin were forced to pay everyone a quarter for how often he has referred to the president as a Marxist, for example, we would all be millionaires. Naturally, he is angry about the president?s political rhetoric. Levin thinks it unfair that Obama attacks the GOP and its candidate. So here is the way it is supposed to work.Obama, as president, may not campaign but instead must remain in the Oval Office running the country. Only the Republicans will be allowed to run negative ads and speak of nasty ?truths? about President Obama. Even during the debates, Mr. Obama must remain mute, and if he does not do so, he will be gagged. Michal Betz Wichita47 percenter?s fearsI am a middle-aged man who for years has been stricken with muscular dystrophy. I am what Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney refers to as a member of the 47 percent who pay no income taxes. When I was physically able to work, I paid my fair share of taxes. Now that I am severely disabled (so disabled that my brother had to type this letter for me), I find that Mr. Romney opposes my ?entitlement? to ?food? for the last days I have on earth.I fear that if Mr. Romney is elected, it will not be a biological disease that takes my life but rather the denial of nourishment to a severely disabled body by a man who cannot ?elegantly state? why he wants to kill me. Mike Milum IndependenceInclude all AmericansI?m a 68-year-old veteran of the Marine Corps and have been working and paying Social Security taxes since I was 16. I am now receiving Social Security (which I earned), am now paying taxes and am a registered independent. And, apparently unlike Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, I think the president of the United States should ?worry about? all of the citizens of the United States, not just rich contributors in Boca Raton, Fla. Joe McMillian OlatheLee Judge cartoonThe Boy Scouts are one of the greatest youth groups in the United Sates (I will go as far to say the world), helping young boys become men and teaching them skills such as leadership and duty along an emphasis on moral values and ethics. Before you judge them, Lee Judge (9-21, Editorial cartoon), let me ask you this. What have you done for the youth of our planet? Patrick Moylan Kansas City Romney, low-pay workRepublican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, have promised 12 million new jobs in their first four years in office. I wonder, will they be good-paying jobs? That?s doubtful because former governor Romney has backed away from supporting an increase in the minimum wage. Will these jobs offer medical coverage? Probably not. Former governor Romney wants to do away with the Affordable Care Act. How about other benefits? Not realistic.Collective bargaining will disappear when the Republican crusade to abolish labor unions succeeds. Will we still be able to celebrate Labor Day by the end of a Romney-Ryan term? What do you think? Gerald K. Gentry, Ph.D. OlatheReport without biasMuch of the media is doing a tremendous disservice to our country by the biased coverage it is giving. Why is The Kansas City Star giving so little coverage on the protests in Pakistan, Egypt, Libya, North Africa and various other countries?Could it be that the news media, in their endeavor to shape and turn U.S. elections, do not find it newsworthy? Another troubling factor is most of the letters printed on the opinion page are in favor of ?their? candidate. The news should be reported objectively and not with the sole purpose of disparaging one candidate while enhancing another. American citizens deserve better. Rose Soptic Roeland Park Kudos to The StarCongratulations to The Star, to reporters Mark Morris and Brian Burnes and to everyone else at the newspaper who played a role in the ?Killer Love? series last week. It was dramatic, riveting and clearly written. If newspapers want to get more readers, I think it?s serial stories like these that they should shoot for. The only criticism I have is that the sketch that accompanied the first installment ? of a wide-eyed and thunderstruck Teresa Stone after finding her husband?s body ? probably was an inaccurate portrayal. As readers found out in the last installment, Teresa had come to loathe her husband, Randy Stone, and wanted him dead. Her response might well have been a fist pump and an emphatic, ?Yes!? Jim Fitzpatrick Kansas CityPets add value to lifeWe all know that pets lower blood pressure and become like one of the family many times over. I?ve been owned by cats all my life. So when my husband died, his cat went into mourning. She didn?t eat or drink for days, cried constantly and slept on his old jacket for a year.I thought I was going to lose her. However, in time, she shifted her grief into affection. Now, she is never more than inches from my side, she greets me at the top of the stairs when I come home and she curls up with me and a good book. She has licked away my tears, has been my sounding board when I vent anger or disgust and loves me, no strings attached.I cannot imagine my life without her. All our pets ask is for food, shelter and affection.I have been humbled by her simple affections.Have you hugged your pet today? Alice Brandom Kansas City Truth from politiciansWouldn?t it be wonderful if one day God decided that all politicians from that day on could only tell the truth? There would be a lot of red faces. Oklahoma transmission line project gets federal energy panel approval

EBR Staff Writer
Published 14 September 2012

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has approved a proposed $3.5bn Plains and Eastern Clean Line project in the state of Oklahoma, US.

The 750-mile power transmission line, which is still three years away from construction, would bring wind energy generated from western Oklahoma turbines to Tennessee.

Clean Line authority has received approval from the FERC to subscribe up to 75% of its line capacity with anchor tenants.

Clean Line Energy Partners CEO Michael Skelly said that with the approval, the company moves a step closer to constructing a clean energy future for the southeast.

"We are excited at the momentum surrounding the Plains & Eastern Clean Line and we look forward to working with our local, state, and federal stakeholders as we continue to develop the transmission line project in a responsible and transparent manner," Skelly added.

Previously, Skelly said the construction is expected to start by late 2015 and complete by late 2017.

Oklahoma Secretary of Energy Michael Ming said, "The Plains & Eastern Clean Line will create jobs, while enabling billions of dollars of investments in Oklahoma's clean energy industry."

Sulfuric acid thrown into face of woman in Calif.

By Wendy Fry and Monica Garske, NBCSanDiego.com

SAN DIEGO -- A man allegedly threw sulfuric acid on a woman who was walking into a Golden Hill laundromat just before 6 a.m. Saturday, police confirmed.

The assault happened at 1015 25th St. The suspect fled the scene by car.

The woman was taken to a hospital and treated for second-degree burns on her face, arms and back. Officials said the victim was injured pretty badly.

More at NBCSanDiego.com: Coast Guard detains 21 aboard panga

She described the suspect's vehicle to police as an older model, dark blue BMW. She told police she did not know the suspect.

About 20 minutes later, police arrested a 55-year-old man in a dark blue BMW who was causing a disturbance nearby at a Shell Gas Station at 2484 F Street.

The woman positively identified the man at the gas station as the same man who threw the caustic chemicals at her in front of the laundromat. Police said the suspect?s name is Arturo Jose Reyes.

Hazardous Materials officials later identified the chemical substance thrown at the victim as sulfuric acid, police said. Hazmat crews decontaminated the scene at 25th Street following the attack.

Reyes was taken into custody and booked into San Diego Central Jail. He's being charged with assault with a caustic chemical and aggravated mayhem.

Watch US News crime videos on NBCNews.com

According to police, when a person is guilty of aggravated mayhem he or she intentionally causes permanent disability or disfigurement of another person, manifesting extreme indifference to the physical or psychological well-being of another person.

Reyes could face life in prison with the possibility of parole if he?s found guilty.

Police said the motive for the assault is under investigation.

The name of the victim was not immediately released.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, if sulfuric acid makes contact with the skin or eyes it can lead to severe redness, pain, blisters and serious, deep skin burns. If the chemical is inhaled or ingested upon contact, it can also cause shortness of breath, shock or collapse.
