Facebook can't figure the value of 900M users

By Cadie Thompson, CNBC.com

Facebook's volatile IPO was the result of disparate opinions about how to value the social network's 900 million users, according to a recent report by the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania.?

"The question for valuation is you need to have both some sort of comparable and some sense of where the numbers are going, and the problem is neither of those are really clear in the case of Facebook," said Ethan Mollick, Wharton Assistant Professor of Management, on CNBC's Squawk on the Street.

"Is it a TV network in comparison? Is it Google ? Is it something entirely new? And on the underlying numbers it's all about potential. We don't know where the numbers are heading. There's a lot of debate over that. If it's just about pricing the stock where it is today, the value is obviously a lot lower than $100 billion."

Because Facebook is still a young company, there's still a lot of speculation about Facebook's future plans for generating revenue, said Mollick of Wharton. Recently, reports have surfaced that Facebook is working on developing its own smartphone, a move that Mollick said will be one of many new ventures for the company.

"They're still experimenting. We don't know what they are going to do with these 900 million users. There are rumors everyday about, 'Is it going to be launching a phone?' 'Is it going to be a new advertising network?' It's likely to be many of these things and many of them are going to fail," Mollick said.

But Facebook's failures aren't as acute as other companies. Between Facebook's botched initial public offering, shareholder lawsuits and its recent stock dip (Facebook's stock fell below $30 for the first time Tuesday, and it closed at $27.72 on Friday), the company remains at the center of attention when it comes to mishaps.?

"So the question is, how does Facebook react to failure? How does it continue to learn without making its much more public missteps a danger to the stock and the people who hold it," Millick said.?

Below,?Former SEC chairman Harvey Pitt his perspective on who's to blame for Facebook's mess on its first day of trading with CNBC.?

LONDON (AP) ? British music royalty was set to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II on Monday with a Buckingham Palace concert featuring acts from throughout her 60-year-reign. But the queen's husband, Prince Philip, will miss the concert after being hospitalized with a bladder infection.

Palace officials said the prince, who will turn 91 on Saturday, was taken to the King Edward VII Hospital in London from Windsor Castle on Monday as a precaution and will remain in the hospital under observation for a few days.

On Sunday, Philip joined the queen and senior royals on the River Thames in cold and blustery weather for a pageant in honor of Elizabeth's 60 years on the throne

Philip has cut back on official engagements in recent years but still maintains a busy schedule. He spent four nights in the hospital over Christmas after suffering chest pains and underwent a successful coronary stent procedure.

Monday's concert features a full hand of knights ? Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Cliff Richard and Sir Tom Jones ? along with Dame Shirley Bassey, Stevie Wonder and younger artists including JLS, Kylie Minogue and Will.i.am.

Will the queen enjoy it?

Her musical tastes are a mystery, and the Press Association news agency reported she brought a pair of earplugs to a similar concert a decade ago. According to The Guardian newspaper, the only song the queen has ever been known to request is "Some Enchanted Evening" from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "South Pacific."

"It may not be that pop or rock is her favorite music, but she has certainly supported us over the years and in return of course we have supported her," said Cliff Richard, who had his first hit in 1959. "I think she'd probably rather go and see an opera."

Before the concert, 12,000 contest winners and charity workers enjoyed a jubilee concert in the palace grounds. Each received a hamper containing a meal ? partly created by experimental chef Heston Blumenthal ? of tea-smoked Scottish salmon, coronation chicken and strawberry crumble crunch made with fruit from the queen's Sandringham estate.

The jubilee was being marked around the world in members of the 54-nation Commonwealth of former British colonies.

The small Pacific island nation of Tonga claimed the honor of lighting the first of more than 4,200 commemorative beacons to be set alight in Britain and abroad. The queen will light the final beacon following the concert.

One beacon will be lit in Kenya at the Treetops Hotel, where Elizabeth was informed of her father's death in 1952, making her the queen.

"We set out to have 2,012 beacons, which would have been the most ever for this type of occasion," said Bruno Peek, pageant master of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee beacons. "To have reached double that figure reflects the national and worldwide respect and affection for the queen and the desire to celebrate her 60-year reign."

After a drizzly, gray start, the weather looked up Monday, with a forecast of some sunshine by the time the concert starts. Despite threatening weather that turned to heavy downpours, more than 1 million people are estimated to have turned out Sunday to watch the queen's barge lead a 1,000-boat flotilla down the Thames.

Six participants in the pageant were treated in hospitals for exposure to the cold and wet, and medics attended to about 40 spectators along the river.

Margaret Watson, 73, in the crowd near Buckingham Palace on Monday, remembered watching the Coronation on the television set which her family bought especially to watch the event.

"I am here to say thank you to the queen for all she has done," said Watson, who came to London from Yorkshire with family members. "I am just so pleased to have lived through her reign."

Others were less happy to have lived through the rain.

"I have run out of dry clothes and my sleeping bag is soaked through. My tent is ruined," said Chris Wittington, 46, from suburban Essex county, near London. "But apart from that, it has been excellent."

"Whether you believe in the monarchy or not, this is just fantastic," said Beverley Clements, 44, who was with 37-year-old sister Harriet Poppleton. "There may not be much to celebrate at the moment, but there is a great sense of Britishness here at the moment."

Exercising her royal prerogative, the queen is expected to attend only part of the concert.

Elton John is set to perform "Your Song," ''I'm Still Standing" and "Crocodile Rock." Tom Jones will pose the question, "Why? Why? Why?" in the song "Delilah," while Annie Lennox will sing "There Must Be An Angel."

Ska band Madness is expected to perform "Our House" on the palace roof, evoking a similar appearance at a Golden Jubilee concert 10 years ago by Brian May of Queen.

Kylie Minogue and Stevie Wonder will play a medley of greatest hits, and Paul McCartney will play "Live and Let Die," his James Bond theme. American soprano Renee Fleming will perform with the BBC Concert Orchestra.

The 262 residents of the remote island of Tristan de Cunha, a British territory 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers) from any other land, are combining their Jubilee beacon with some environmentally conscious gardening. They are lighting their fire with invasive species including the New Zealand Christmas Tree, loganberry and other alien plants.

"You don't get more patriotic than saving U.K. wildlife on the queen's Jubilee, so we decided to make the occasion by lighting a beacon made from all the plants we remove," chief islander Ian Laverollo said.

How To Make A Goal Board | How To Make A Vision Board

health and fitness goal boardMarita here, today I want to talk about how to make a goal board or vision board. It?s easy: you add your intentions or goals in form of images and affirmations to a poster board. If you make a goal board to achieve health and fitness goals you can do it in a few steps. It?s a good idea to keep a daily journal, it will help you keep track of what?s important and help you focus on your goals.

?

  1. ?First you want to clarify what exactly the goals are. One could be to loose 10 pounds. If you want to be more exact you can state by when you want to lose the 10 pounds.
  2. Or you want to start a regular exercise program to be more flexible, toned and fit. Set yourself the intention: how many times a week can you go to the gym or to a yoga class, walking, biking, dancing or other exercise. Find something that?s fun and stick to it!
  3. In order to feel good and be healthy,? it?s important to eat lots of vegetables, fruit, chicken and fish. Try to minimize, alcohol, coffee, sweets and fast foods. You don?t have to be fanatic. But if you do all these steps you will feel good,?look good and? be fit.
  4. Now that you have your goals, find the images that represent those goals and the affirmations or words and glue them onto the board. If you can?t find the right words, type it up and print it, or write them with markers.
  5. When finished put the goal board, where you can see it all the time, print a smaller version and have it in your car and wallet, in your phone, or as wallpaper on your computer. Visualize yourself fit and healthy, visualize, visualize and visualize!

The key is to keep your unconscious reminded of your? goals.? It will do whatever it can to find ways to achieve your goals for you. It works like a billboard, trust the process! I know, I have been there myself, I make goal boards for every aspect of my life. A few years ago I lost about 40 pounds, by changing my diet and sticking to a regular exercise program. It now is a new habit to eat healthier and move my body.

Taxing the Poor to Save Hollywood Celebrities

By Gina Loudon PhD
6/1/2012

Welfare, like greed, has many faces.

Thomas Jefferson warned us that as soon as people learn they can vote themselves money from the treasury, it will signal the end of our republic.

The occupiers talk about the 1%. Americans point fingers at Wall Street. Ron Paul tells us to audit the Fed.? All are bemoaning the same prediction Jefferson warned us about. A most insidious ?get rich quick? scheme may just be the use of the ballot to tap into the public treasury and separate citizens from their wealth. The new business model is simple. Pull together a few wealthy, conflicted interests, and stick a tax on the ballot making baseless promises and vote yourself largess from the public treasury. It works like a charm and it is being copied everywhere.

In 2004, Stowers Institute spent over $30 million and passed the constitutional right to clone and kill in Missouri. Cloners felt so good about their prospects that they duped California voters into going much further and voting a $3 billion bond issue ? Billion with a B ? to annually fund cloning research.?Proposition 71?passed with almost 60% of the benevolent but deluded Californians hoping to find cures for their ill neighbors and celebrities like Michael J. Fox. So how have Californians done? The score: Researchers: $ Billions-Sick people: Nada.

California is broke. Katy Grimes, at Cal Watchdog reports that the figure is over $41 billion, which is far higher than the $17 billion that the lapdogs in the mainstream media will report. How can taxpayers justify junkets to Vegas when they cannot afford their mortgage? The answer: Who cares? Californians voted to obligate themselves, so dialing the spending back is not an option. Sadly, California taxpayers have shown themselves so pathetically gullible that they have been targeted again.

The state that spends almost as much as the national treasury on cloning research, with zero cures or payoffs of any sort, is now polling in favor of voting over $800 million a year in new spending.? This time, the sell exploits cancer victims.

Most people, when asked to invest, ask one question right out of the gate: ?What is the expected return on investment (ROI)? When California voters ask the question (making the audacious assumption that Californians actually care to ask if they are getting a ROI), the answer is a simple ?NO?. Nothing.? Seven years into a ten year, $3 billion investment of public funds, and there is not one single cure, not one single therapy, not one single successful clinical trial, although there is one failed clinical trial from a failed spine regeneration.

What Californians do have is one public statement after another about funding for this or collaboration for that and a few international agreements inked. A handful of researchers and bureaucrats get junkets and all Californians get is this lousy bill that is overdue. So, Michael J. Fox, how is that taxpayer funding working out for you?

Not surprisingly, seeing that The Golden State likes to dump their gold into the pockets of a ?collaboration? of elitist do-gooders, they are coming back to the golden trough. Led by the American Cancer Society (how many cures have you given us?) which plowed an eye-popping $7.5 million into the campaign, the coalition of other hangers on have placed a stunningly greedy tobacco tax of $1 per pack on the ballot, June 5th. It is estimated to haul in upward of $850 million per year that these groups can tap for ?collaborations? of their own. Spending $7.5 million now for hundreds of millions in perpetuity is a pretty good potential ROI ? for the ?investors?? not Californians.

In years past, social welfare activists would be crying foul. Wealthy research groups should not be making a killing off the backs of smokers, the majority of whom are poor, minority, and female. Leftists who revile regressive taxation usually hate sales taxes. Where are they now? No tax is more regressive than the cigarette tax. There is scant evidence that raising the cost of cigarettes causes the addicted poor to quit. The ones who suffer are their children.?Evidently, in Taxifornia, even the liberals can look the other way when the poor are getting screwed. Whose heart is bleeding now?

By contrast to California, Missouri leftists, led by Amy Blouin of the respected (albeit left wing) advocacy group,?Missouri Budget Project,?stands squarely in opposition to The American Cancer Society?s efforts to screw the poor, just as they did when the cancer people tried unsuccessfully to get into Missouri wallets in 2006. It seems that people in fly over land ask questions that progressive Californians do not.

Looking deeper into the motivations behind these tax drives, Californians might want to consider the?scathing report?on cancer ?charities? issued by the American Institute on Philanthropy titled, ?Cancer Charities Need Dose of Organizational Chemotherapy?. The top salaries among philanthropy executives are dominated by cancer charities. The lead bankroller of these taxpayer heists is the American Cancer Society with nearly $1 billion in annual donations. Their COO, Don Thomas, hauls in almost $1 million per year, evidently whether his ballot issues win or fail. How are cancer survival rates improving after all of that investment?

Further complicating these questions for Californians, and taxpayers across the country are questions of the time-value of money and lost opportunity costs. On what could the public have otherwise invested this money? Those are questions for another day. It is interesting however, to note that in Missouri, where voters rejected the cancer elites? tax advances, the budget is balanced. One can imagine that for Californians, when retired government union members and current office holders left your budget $41 billion upside down already, investing $1 billion or so per year paying down debt or building infrastructure rather than blowing it on shiny new shoes is academic. Those are big questions. We will see if Californians really care about cures, the children of the already disadvantaged, or ROI this Tuesday.
