Calling all hackers and game developers! There?s a new hackable, open-platform gaming console coming and its sparking a serious buzz. It?s called the OUYA (Ooh-Yah) Boxer8. OUYA is an Android powered console that plugs right into your TV. In gaming, TV is the last closed platform. The team at OUYA intend to crack that platform wide open.

So, what are some features? How about an OUYA exclusive Final Fantasy. You?ll also be able to stream PC games through OnLive! It?ll have the award-winning XBMC media player. Are you into League of Legends or StarCraft? You can watch them both on OUYA via Twitch.TV. The console will have music videos courtesy of VEVO. Also, bump your favorite music through the iHeartRadio and TuneIn apps. Developers of the system plan to use the free-to-play model. FHN Model UN team competed in World Competition in Beijing, China in July.? FHN students Dan Lance,? Collin Mathias (won his fourth, best delegate award) and Nick McKay (took second place in his committee) participated along with FHN advisor, Kirk Vredevelt.? They also had a chance to see and learn about China and Chinese culture.

Mr. Kirk Vredevelt and 3 FHN Model UN students (Collin Mathias, Nick McKay, Dan Lance) left on Friday July 20 and arrived in Beijing, China, Sunday morning, July 22, to the largest rainstorm there in 61 years.? Mr. Vredevelt said, ?The Chinese are friendly and optimistic. The young people seem to be exploding with energy. ?

They first toured Tianamen Square, the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace. The Next day they went to the Great Wall; and on the third day, visited the National Museum of China and shopping via the subway.? Mr. Vredevelt said, ?My students said being in Beijing today(20 million people) is like watching New York City being built. Yes there is poverty and they have a long way to go, but they are on their way.?

Using methods borrowed from epidemiology, researchers have identified Anatolia, a peninsula that is now part of Turkey, as the origin of the major language families of Europe and West Asia.

Indo-European languages ??a category that includes most of the major languages of Europe and western Asia ? originated in what is now Turkey, between 8,000 and 9,500 years ago, say researchers.

English is one member of a large family, the Indo-European languages, that are now spoken by a huge swath of the world. But where they originated is the subject of controversy, with experts undecided between two areas of western Asia.

Borrowing a technique used to reconstruct family trees for viruses, an international research team has come down squarely on one side of the debate: Indo-European languages originated in Anatolia, a southwestern Asian peninsula that is now part of Turkey, between 8,000 and 9,500 years ago, and were carried, at least in part, by the spread of agriculture.

Other researchers maintain that Indo-European languages originated in the steppes north of the Caspian and Black seas 6,000 years ago and were spread by the semi-nomadic Kurgan people.

"These two theories have two different ages and homelands, and by tracing back in time using these methods to study viral outbreaks, we are able to test between the theories," Quentin Atkinson of the University of Auckland in New Zealand said in an audio interview released by the journal Science, in which the new research appears.

Instead of constructing a family tree by comparing the DNA of viruses, Atkinson and colleagues compared what are known as cognates, or words in different languages with the same origin. For instance, the English "mother" and the Spanish "madre" are cognates. [Original Language Sounded Like Yoda]

The researchers included about 20 extinct languages in their sample of 100 Indo-European languages; some of these extinct languages, such as Hittite, were spoken more than 3,000 years ago. These ancient languages helped the team look further back in time.

They looked to historical events, such as the breakup of the Roman Empire's language Latin into the Romance languages, to establish a time scale for the evolution of the Indo-European languages.?

They then used a statistical method to focus in on the family trees that best explained their data. The result strongly favors the Anatolian hypothesis, Atkinson said.

The spread of agriculture, either as new generations of farmers sought out new land or through the conversion of hunter-gatherers, was a mechanism that would explain the expansive spread of the languages in this family, according to the researchers, but they added that agriculture was probably not the sole driver of language spread. ?

The research is detailed in Friday's (Aug. 24) issue of the journal Science.

Immersion Hiking

The past few years has seen an increase in people going on long distance hikes over a long period of time. It is becoming increasingly common to go on 30-day or longer expeditions. People want true natural immersion and while 30 days may seem too rough for some, others relish the challenge. A successful camping trip is about having the right camping equipment. When you spend a month or more in the woods, having the right camping gear is essential.

Many seasoned outdoorsmen will tell you that your boots are the most important part of your ensemble. Make sure you have a comfortable, broken in pair of boots with extra laces. If you think your feet hurt after a few days on the trails, imagine what it is like during week 2 of a month long hike. Boots are something you simply cannot cut corners with. It may seem silly but a lot of people have to cut their trips early because of painful blisters, foot infections and other issues that occur when subpar boots are used. I would never advising subpar camping gear, but with boots, that warning is doubly important.

The next most important piece of camping equipment you need is your tent. You want something that is light, easy to set up and break down, and can withstand inclement weather. You can opt for a few small tents for hunting and every person or two people carries their own tent. You can also opt for one or two 5-person tents and have your fellow hikers take turns schlepping it.

Many people like hunting for food as they hike. Since hunting apparel can be heavy, go for lightweight items. Keep in mind you will be carrying everything on you at all times. Every ounce counts!

Make sure you also have a well-stocked first aid kit. Hiking is a rough activity. There will be cuts, bruises, bug bites and more. Take aspirin, a lot of bandages and disinfectants, anti-itch balm and iodine. If you are not sure what to take for first aid, you can easily buy a first aid kit at the same place you purchase hunting and camping gear. Again, go for something of quality but light weight.
A long, immersive hunt has its challenges, but many people find it is the most rewarding way to enjoy nature. If you want to take your outdoor experience to the next level, look into popular group hikes, multi-week trails and other immersive experiences.

You never know where the next great family recipe keeper will come from. I was flipping through the LCBO?s ?Food & Drink? magazine and found this halloween themed recipe. What a great soup! For those not living in Ontario, where the only place you can buy liquor is at a government controlled (& heavily taxed) store, the LCBO stands for the Liquor Control Board of Ontario. Maybe one day we will be like our neighbors (we say neighbours) south of the border and sell adult beverages in every 7-11 or corner store around, but until then we will continue to buy beer at the government Beer Store and liquor at the LCBO.
One good thing about the LCBO is their magazine. I have often found very good recipes andlast? Septembers was no exception.
I changed the recipe slightly to veganize it but for the most part it remained the same. The big difference was I omitted the 35% cream at the end. I was going to use silken soft tofu and almond milk but found after using the immersion blender, I didn?t need anything else. It was smooth and ?creamy? enough without anything else.
Give it a try.

Vampires? Demise Roasted Garlic & Pumpkin Soup
Adapted from ?Food & Drink? Autumn 2011, pg 204

Roasted Garlic:
4 heads of garlic, tips sliced off
2 tbsp olive oil

Soup:
2 tbsp olive oil
3 medium onions, diced
3 medium carrots, peeled and coarsely diced
3 tbsp fresh ginger, peeled & finely diced
1/2 tsp chili powder
1 can (796 ml) pure pumpkin puree, not pie filling
3 medium yellow-flesh potatoes, peeled & cubed(1?)
2 tbsp fresh sage, chopped
8 cups vegetable stock
Freshly ground nutmeg
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste( the original recipe calls for white pepper but I don?t mind the tiny black dots in my soup and prefer the black pepper)

1.? Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F.
2.? Place garlic heads on a large sheet of foil, drizzle with oil and wrap up tight.
3.? Place on center rack and bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes
4.? Remove garlic and let cool

Health reform, Medicare & short-term insurance - Get Smart Get ...

In January, 2014, people with pre-existing medical conditions won?t be able to have their applications for health insurance declined. But, what do you do between now and then if you?re uninsured and unable to qualify for a private plan?

Short-term health insurance can be an excellent, affordable coverage option for people who have a temporary gap in coverage and know they?ll have access to renewable health insurance within six to twelve months. And, older people who find themselves uninsured and a year away from Medicare eligibility often find it easier to qualify for short-term coverage than major medical coverage.

What folks may not know is that when the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act (ACA), short-term insurance plans became a more viable option for younger, healthier Americans.

Here?s why:

1. Renewability is no longer an issue: Traditionally, the biggest downside to buying a short-term health insurance plan was that they were not guaranteed to be renewable.? People who developed a pre-existing medical condition while on a short-term plan could re-apply for coverage, but in most states, the carrier could reject them because of the condition. But, beginning January 1, 2014 a person applying for major medical health insurance cannot have their application for coverage declined based on a pre-existing condition. So, if a short-term plan won?t renew you in 2014, look to a major medical plan.
2. Saving money can be good: Short-term health insurance is ?typically very inexpensive in comparison to other types of health insurance. According to eHealth?s recent report, The Cost & Benefits of Short-Term Individual and Family Health Insurance Plans, the average plan cost $67 per month in 2011. And, the average deductible was $1,821 (source).
3. Access can be easier: Until 2014, short-term policies will likely be easier to qualify for than major medical insurance for some people, because short-term policies can exclude coverage for any pre-existing condition. So, for example, if you had a back injury five years ago, your application for an individual major medical policy could be declined today, even if your back has not bothered you in four-and-a-half years. But, with a short-term plan you and the insurer can agree to exclude coverage for your back and you?ll still get coverage for anything not related to your back that happens while on the short-term plan.
4. Be aware of skimpier benefits: One downside to short-term health insurance is that plans are not nearly as comprehensive as major medical insurance. So, if you can afford major medical and qualify for it, most experts will advise you to go that route. But, limited benefits make short-term plans more affordable and accessible. And, as long as you know what you?re buying, they can be a great option.
