Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Congressman Richard Hanna stops by a Broome County business that supports creating jobs for the visually impaired.

He spoke with Action News about providing additional support for the blind community.

At the Association for Vision Rehabilitation and Employment Center, or A.V.R.E., they work with people of all ages who are visually impaired.

Preparing them for life in the work place and holding a job in any field of their choice.

Congressman Richard Hanna is touring a number of places in the Binghamton area and is getting a better feel for ways he can help.

He supports the AbilityOne Program that creates jobs for the visually impaired around the Southern Tier.

"It gets people who might otherwise be home-bound or institution-bound into a place where they can feel productive, interact with people, and do something that hopefully they enjoy doing," said Representative Richard Hanna, (R) 24th District.

"There are no one jobs that people who are blind do, the problem is finding the solution so that they can be employed in almost any job," said Robert Hanye, C.E.O. of A.V.R.E.

A.V.R.E. also works with local schools and students to prepare for the upcoming school year and any visually impaired students that might be enrolled.

Helping them understand their strengths and weaknesses, and how to navigate the grounds.
