Atari announced on their official Facebook feed this afternoon, that Amazon was now accepting pre-orders for it?s upcoming Flashback 4 all-in-one console, from At Games. The latest version of the Atari 2600 ?emulator in a box? was made available to beta testers over the last month or so, and the system, which contains 75 built-in games, is ready to roll and available to order in advance. Below the cut we have some information about pricing, the complete list of games to be featured, and a really cool discovery about an IR sensor. (Yes, it is!)
First off, as you will notice, the upcoming Flashback 4 is designed very much like the Flashback 3, with the circular, and flat orange and red buttons which offer the power, select, reset and difficulty switches. Nothing really fancy as far as that is concerned, it?s pretty standard. The front of the system features two joystick ports, that are supposedly 100% compatible with any classic Atari 2600 controller that you may own, such as the original Joystick, Paddles, Driving or Keyboard controllers. Not to mention, that At Games is also going to be selling separately, brand new paddle controller replicas for use on the system, so even if you don?t own a vintage set, you can get a brand new set! (Bare in mind however, that if you are going to use an analog controller like the Paddles, this device will not give you full analog control, as the system translates the code in digital, which is certainly functional, but not nearly as accurate.)
The system comes with 2 controllers that resemble the original Joystick Controllers, but unlike the originals, these babies are wireless! (And unlike the original wireless joysticks, no obnoxious antenna!) On the other versions of Flashback, sometimes it would difficult to hunch over the console to play your games, but now you can play from across the room (supposedly)! Of course, those that was true nostalgia, will play with their eyes too close to the TV set, so close in fact that your mother would be upset. Of course, the drawback of using IR technology for wireless controllers is you need line of site in order to get it to function properly. The joysticks use 3 AAA batteries for each controller. The controllers also have reset, select and start buttons right on them, so you don?t have to get up to reset or change games.
When the system is turned on, you get a menu of games to pick, of which Flashback 4 has a total of 75 to pick from. Out of those seventy-five games, fifteen of them are new to the series. Here is a complete list of what you will be paying for with this system:

Some of the handful of games that are new this time are certainly amazing choices. Warlords is an excellent party title (as long as you have a set of paddles), and Jungle Hunt is a classic in my eyes, that?s lots of fun to play in the arcades and at home. One thing to keep in mind is that Space Invaders is NOT the VCS version. It?s actually the version used in the arcade, and definitely not a version that could be held in a simple 4k or 8k ROM. Weird, but welcomed! But before we all get too excited, the version of Tempest that is included, is not like the Space Invaders port. Nope, it?s the unreleased prototype that is quite unfinished and quite unplayable. But still, a neat piece of history for those that wouldn?t otherwise be made aware of it.
Sadly, yet again, Atari did not release this version with a cartridge slot for playing your own collection. In the past, modifications had been done to actually incorporate a cartridge slot, but that was done by hobbyists that are good with a soldering iron. I?m sure that once this system gets released, someone will be able to create a slot. My assumption is that since the Flashback series are usually created with the casual gamer in mind, in this day in age, they probably assume that most casual gamers didn?t keep their old carts. But still, would be nice to see the option at the very least someday!
The Atari Flashback 4 is now available for pre-order from Amazon. The system retails for $59.99, but can currently be pre-ordered for $49.99. You will also get a free classic Asteroids poster with the purchase! If you are interested in getting a new set of Paddle Controllers to compliment the purchase, they are also available for pre-order. It sells for $24.99. Both the system and additional paddles are scheduled to be shipped out on November 13, 2012.
